Jonathan Oketch

The Ugandan basketball fraternity has been plunged into mourning following the untimely death of JKL Dolphins guard Jonathan Oketch, popularly known as “Timaya,” who passed away on Monday night after succumbing to injuries sustained in a road accident earlier this month.

According to close friends and associates, Oketch breathed his last at approximately 10:30 p.m., bringing to an end a courageous battle for survival that had kept teammates, family members, and basketball fans hopeful for a miracle. His passing marks a heartbreaking moment for one of the National Basketball League’s most respected and hardworking players.

Oketch’s final appearance on the basketball court came on June 3 when he featured for JKL Dolphins in a dominant 114-75 victory over Kampala Rockets at Nakivubo. Although not always in the spotlight, the guard was known for his relentless work ethic, defensive intensity, and willingness to contribute whenever called upon. Teammates often described him as a selfless player whose impact extended far beyond the statistics sheet.

His absence was immediately felt when JKL Dolphins returned to action on June 10 against Rezlife Saints. As the team suffered a 90-61 defeat, Oketch remained hospitalized in critical condition, with players and supporters rallying behind him through prayers and messages of encouragement. Sadly, despite weeks of medical care and unwavering support from the basketball community, the talented guard was unable to recover from his injuries.

During the ongoing National Basketball League season, Oketch featured in 17 games for JKL Dolphins, averaging 4.5 points and 2.2 rebounds per contest. While those numbers only tell part of his story, coaches and teammates valued his discipline, commitment, and team-first mentality. Whether starting on the court or coming off the bench, he consistently brought energy and determination that earned him respect throughout the league.

Oketch’s basketball journey reflected years of dedication to the sport. Before joining JKL Dolphins, he represented Ndejje Angels, where he developed into a dependable guard and gained recognition for his steady performances. He later featured for Sommet during the previous campaign before making the move to JKL Dolphins, where he continued to grow as a player and establish himself as a familiar face in Uganda’s top-flight basketball competition.

Beyond his contributions on the court, Oketch was widely admired for his character. Friends remember him as cheerful, humble, and passionate about basketball. His infectious personality and positive attitude made him a beloved figure among teammates and opponents alike. The nickname “Timaya” became synonymous not only with his playing style but also with the vibrant spirit he brought wherever he went.

His death represents a significant loss for JKL Dolphins, who now face the difficult task of continuing their season while mourning a teammate and friend. It is equally a painful moment for Ugandan basketball, which has lost a player whose best years appeared to still be ahead of him.

Oketch’s passing also adds to a growing list of active Ugandan athletes who have died in 2026, deepening concerns and sorrow across the country’s sporting landscape. His death comes at a time when several sports disciplines are still grappling with the loss of athletes whose lives and careers were cut short unexpectedly. The repeated tragedies have left teammates, coaches, administrators, and fans reflecting on a year marked by heartbreak and mourning.

In May, the basketball community was devastated by the death of promising player Maxine Modesty Anyango, whose passing sent shockwaves through the game and prompted an outpouring of tributes from clubs, teammates, and supporters. Just weeks later, Ugandan sport was dealt further blows with the deaths of footballer Cissy Nantongo and rugby player Sydney Gongodyo in June. Each athlete was celebrated not only for their performances on the field of play but also for their dedication, character, and influence within their respective sporting communities.

The loss of Jonathan Oketch now adds another painful chapter to what has become a particularly difficult year for Ugandan sport. Beyond the statistics, trophies, and achievements, the deaths of these athletes serve as a reminder of the human stories behind the games that inspire thousands across the country. As tributes continue to pour in from across the sporting fraternity, many have called for unity, support for grieving families, and the preservation of the legacies left behind by athletes whose passion and commitment helped shape Uganda’s sporting landscape. Their memories will continue to live on through the teammates they inspired, the fans they entertained, and the communities they proudly represented.

As tributes continue to pour in from teammates, clubs, administrators, and fans across the country, Jonathan Oketch will be remembered as a committed athlete who gave everything to the game he loved. Though his life was cut tragically short, his contribution to Ugandan basketball and the memories he created with those around him will endure long after the final buzzer.

The National Basketball League has lost one of its own, and the Ugandan sporting family has lost a passionate ambassador of the game. For many who knew him, Jonathan “Timaya” Oketch will forever be remembered not just for the points he scored or the games he played, but for the heart, determination, and humanity he brought to the sport.
