Uganda Premier League champions Vipers SC have made a major statement of intent in the 2026/27 transfer market after officially unveiling highly-rated midfielder Joel Sserunjogi as their first signing of the primary transfer window. The Kitende-based side confirmed the acquisition on Wednesday, July 1, through their official social media platforms, announcing that the midfielder has signed a three-year employment contract. The move represents the first piece of business for the Venoms this transfer period as they begin preparations for another campaign in which they will be expected to compete for domestic honors and make an impact on the continental stage.

Sserunjogi joins Vipers as a free agent following the expiration of his three-year contract with Uganda Premier League rivals KCCA FC. His availability on a free transfer attracted significant interest due to his proven quality and consistency at the highest level of Ugandan football. For Vipers, securing one of the league’s most sought-after midfielders without paying a transfer fee is viewed as a significant coup and a clear indication of the club’s ambition ahead of the new season.

The 24-year-old arrives at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, with a growing reputation as one of the finest midfielders in the country. Blessed with excellent vision, tireless work rate, technical ability, and a strong understanding of the game, Sserunjogi has developed into a complete box-to-box midfielder capable of influencing matches at both ends of the pitch. His ability to break up opposition attacks, retain possession, and contribute offensively makes him a valuable addition to a Vipers side looking to maintain its dominance in Ugandan football.

His signing is expected to help fill the void left by experienced midfielder Taddeo Lwanga, who recently departed the club to join Kenyan giants AFC Leopards. While replacing a player of Lwanga’s stature is never an easy task, Vipers believe Sserunjogi possesses the qualities and maturity required to step into a key role within the team. The move also signals a shift toward building a younger core of players capable of serving the club for years to come.

Sserunjogi enjoyed an impressive spell at KCCA FC, where he established himself as one of the club’s most reliable performers over the last three seasons. During his time at Lugogo, he consistently delivered commanding displays in midfield, earning praise for his leadership, consistency, and ability to rise to the occasion in crucial matches. His performances not only endeared him to KCCA supporters but also strengthened his status as one of the premier midfielders in the Uganda Premier League.

Before making the switch to KCCA, Sserunjogi played a pivotal role in one of the most memorable moments in Buganda Masaza Cup history. In 2023, he inspired Busiro Ssaza to their maiden Masaza Cup triumph, producing a series of outstanding performances throughout the tournament. His influence during that historic campaign showcased his leadership qualities and ability to thrive under pressure, ultimately earning him greater recognition across the country and paving the way for his move to top-flight football.

The midfielder’s rise has also extended to the international stage. Sserunjogi has already earned senior caps with the Uganda Cranes and continues to establish himself as a regular option for the national team. One of the highlights of his international career came during the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), where he played an important role as Uganda reached the quarterfinals. His experience in national team colors is expected to further enhance the quality and competitiveness he brings to the Vipers squad.

His football journey is a testament to patience, dedication, and steady progression. Over the years, Sserunjogi has represented Katera High School, St Julian, Buddu Ssaza, Kajjansi United, Busiro Ssaza, and KCCA FC, climbing through different levels of the game before establishing himself among Uganda’s elite players. Each stage of his career has contributed to the development of the accomplished midfielder that Vipers supporters will now be eager to watch in red and blue.

The acquisition comes at a time when Vipers are undergoing significant changes ahead of the new season. Earlier this week, the club appointed experienced French tactician Denis Lavagne as head coach on a two-year contract. Lavagne’s arrival, combined with the signing of Sserunjogi, reflects the club’s determination to strengthen both on and off the pitch as they seek to defend their league title and challenge strongly in continental competitions.

Vipers’ transfer activity may not end with Sserunjogi. Reports indicate that the club is on the verge of completing the signing of defender Nicholas Mwere from BUL FC on a three-year deal, although an official announcement is yet to be made. Should the move materialize, it would further reinforce a squad already packed with quality and experience.

With the transfer window now officially open, the arrival of Joel Sserunjogi could be the first of several significant additions at Kitende. For Vipers fans, the signing offers plenty of excitement and optimism, while for the rest of the league, it serves as an early warning that the reigning champions are wasting no time in strengthening their ranks for another title challenge.
