UPDF Tomahawks’ player

UPDF Tomahawks’ fate was finally sealed on Sunday evening as the military side suffered relegation from the National Basketball League following a 67-62 defeat to Victoria Crocs at the YMCA Court. The result brought an end to a difficult campaign that saw the former top-flight side struggle for consistency and ultimately fail to do enough to preserve their place among Uganda’s basketball elite.

The defeat was particularly painful given the significance of the occasion. UPDF entered the contest knowing that every possession mattered as they battled to keep their survival hopes alive. However, against a determined Victoria Crocs side, the Tomahawks once again found themselves playing catch-up for large stretches of the game, a recurring theme that has defined much of their troubled season.

Victoria Crocs made their intentions clear from the opening tip-off, controlling the tempo and executing efficiently on both ends of the floor. Their aggressive offense and disciplined defense allowed them to establish an early advantage, forcing the Tomahawks onto the back foot. By the end of the first quarter, the Crocs had built a comfortable 22-15 lead, capitalizing on UPDF’s struggles to contain penetration and convert scoring opportunities.

The second quarter offered little relief for the Tomahawks. While they attempted to close the gap, Victoria Crocs continued to dictate proceedings, moving the ball well and punishing defensive lapses. The Crocs’ dominance on the boards and ability to score in transition helped extend their advantage to 11 points heading into halftime, leaving UPDF facing a daunting challenge in the second half.

Despite the uphill task, the Tomahawks emerged from the locker room with renewed determination. Realizing their National Basketball League status was hanging by a thread, they increased their defensive intensity and began to find better offensive rhythm. Possession by possession, the deficit slowly narrowed as the military side refused to surrender without a fight.

The game’s most dramatic stretch came in the fourth quarter when UPDF produced a spirited comeback that briefly threatened to turn the contest on its head. The Tomahawks unleashed a remarkable 10-0 scoring run, cutting the deficit to just three points and injecting fresh energy into the contest. For a moment, it appeared that a late rescue mission could be on the cards.

However, Victoria Crocs showed composure when it mattered most. The Crocs weathered the storm, responded to the pressure, and made crucial plays down the stretch to protect their lead. Their ability to remain calm in decisive moments ultimately proved the difference as they held on to secure a valuable 67-62 victory.

Much of Victoria Crocs’ success was driven by the outstanding performances of Mark Ngobi and Chuol Nyot. Ngobi led all scorers with 22 points, delivering several crucial baskets at key moments in the game. Nyot was equally influential, recording an impressive double-double of 15 points and 15 rebounds, dominating the paint and providing the physical presence needed to keep the Crocs in control.

For the Tomahawks, Bolton Rujumba led the resistance with 18 points, while Henry Okoth contributed 11 points in a determined effort to keep his side in the contest. Their performances highlighted the fighting spirit that UPDF displayed throughout the evening, but it was not enough to alter the final outcome.

The defeat officially confirms UPDF Tomahawks’ relegation to the FUBA Division One League, ending their stay in Uganda’s premier basketball competition. While the club can take pride in the resilience shown during the closing stages of the match, the result also serves as a reflection of a season in which promising moments were too often overshadowed by costly setbacks.

As attention shifts toward the future, the Tomahawks face the challenge of rebuilding and preparing for life in Division One. For a club with a proud basketball tradition, the objective will now be clear: regroup, learn from the mistakes of a difficult campaign, and fight for an immediate return to the National Basketball League.

Sunday’s defeat may have marked the end of one chapter, but it could also be the beginning of a determined journey back to the top.
