KCCA Drops Co-Coach Experiment, Entrusts Ssenyondo with Top Job

Uganda Premier League giants KCCA FC have officially appointed Brian Ssenyondo as the club’s new head coach ahead of the 2026/27 season, ending the co-coaching arrangement that had been in place over the previous campaign.

The club confirmed the appointment as part of a wider restructuring of its technical team, with Jackson Magera named first assistant coach and Simeon Massa taking up the role of second assistant coach. The changes signal a clear shift in leadership as the Kasasiro Boys seek to build on last season’s progress and mount a stronger challenge for silverware.

Ssenyondo and Magera had jointly overseen the team during the 2025/26 campaign, an arrangement that generated significant discussion among supporters and football observers. While the dual-coaching model had previously delivered success at Vipers SC, where John Ayala Luyinda and Fred Muhumuza guided the Venoms to a domestic double, the same formula failed to produce the desired results at Lugogo.

Despite remaining competitive throughout the season and finishing second in the Uganda Premier League standings, KCCA fell short of their ultimate objectives. Their hopes of domestic silverware were further dented when they suffered a quarterfinal elimination from the Uganda Cup at the hands of URA FC, leaving many questioning whether the shared leadership structure was sustainable in the long term.

The club’s latest decision effectively places Ssenyondo firmly at the helm, granting him full responsibility for the team’s footballing direction. From recruitment and player exits to tactical philosophy, training methods, and matchday selections, the former Uganda Hippos coach will now have the final say on all major sporting matters.

The appointment also arrives amid speculation that recent coaching regulations from Federation of Uganda Football Associations may have influenced the restructuring. The governing body is understood to require both head coaches and assistant coaches in the top flight to possess CAF A coaching licences, prompting several clubs to reassess their technical setups. While KCCA FC have not publicly linked their decision to the directive, the timing has inevitably fueled discussion.

Beyond the coaching bench, KCCA have also made changes within their performance department. Strength and conditioning coach Felix Ayobo has departed the club and will be replaced by Ram Nyakana Mpuuga. Nyakana arrives with an impressive résumé, having previously worked with the Uganda Cranes as well as spells at SC Villa and Vipers SC.

The restructuring takes immediate effect as preparations for the new campaign gather momentum. With preseason plans already underway, KCCA’s management will be hoping that a clearly defined chain of command can provide the stability and consistency required to return the club to the summit of Ugandan football.

Reaction among supporters has been divided. A section of the fan base believes the club should have handed Ssenyondo sole control much earlier, arguing that the co-coaching arrangement created unnecessary complications in decision-making. Others remain cautious, insisting that results on the pitch will ultimately determine whether the latest move proves successful.

KCCA have already shown intent in the transfer market, securing the signature of Elvis Ngonde from SC Villa, and more arrivals are expected before the window closes. With a new technical structure in place and squad rebuilding underway, the Lugogo outfit appear determined to ensure that the 2026/27 season delivers a stronger challenge for both league and cup honours.

For Ssenyondo, the promotion represents both a vote of confidence and a significant test. The excuses that often accompany shared leadership are now gone. As KCCA FC enter a new era under a single head coach, attention will firmly be on whether he can transform promise into trophies.
