
The 2023 Edition of the Father Grimes Schools’ Chess championship, arguably the biggest chess competition among schools ( primary & secondary ) , organized by the Uganda Chess Federation has kicked off today at St Mary’s College Kisubi (SMACK) and will run up to 9th May 2023.
Eight rounds will be played basing on the Swiss format of play during this year’s edition (Primary Schools Category) that has attracted over twenty Primary schools from different parts of the country including City Parents School and Sir Apollo Kaggwa Schools, which managed to field more than two teams.
City Parents school and Sir Apollo Kaggwa schools, boosting of an array of upcoming stars in the game are joined by All Saints PPS, Bonna Bana Association, Busega P/S, Friends International Christian Academy, Gombe Junior School, Home School, Kampala Academy P/S, KCCA P/S Kamwokya and Mustard Seed Primary School
Other participanting schools include Peak P/S ,Rafiki Classical Christian Good Times Infant School, Goshen Junior School , Hillside Primary School, Naalya Children’s, Siima Nusery & P/S, St Donozio Boys P/S, St Francis J/S Buddo and Uganda Martyrs P/S
OPENING RESULTS :
Out of the expected eight rounds to be played during the Father Grimes School’s Chess championship, a total of three rounds have been played on day one with a couple of shocking results that brought tears of joy and outpouring of emotions from the participating youngsters and teachers involved.

The schools championships have in the past given rise to a number of big guns in the game over the years, this tournament has been used as an opportune platform to showcase budding talents which are then prepared for serious club, national junior and senior competitions.
