JT Lady Jaguars Draw First Blood Against Magic Stormers in NBL Playoff Semifinal Series

JT Lady Jaguars moved one step closer to the National Basketball League (NBL) finals after securing a convincing 77-61 victory over Magic Stormers in the opening game of their playoff semifinal series at Lugogo on Friday.

The Jaguars produced a dominant start, setting the pace from the opening tip as they combined efficient scoring with disciplined defence to take control of the contest. Their early pressure paid off as they finished the opening quarter with a 24-16 lead, giving themselves the perfect foundation for the remainder of the game.

JT continued to dictate proceedings in the second period, maintaining their intensity on both ends of the court. Their offensive rhythm and defensive organisation allowed them to extend the gap, heading into the halftime break with a commanding 43-28 advantage and leaving Magic Stormers with a difficult task ahead.

After the interval, Magic Stormers returned with renewed energy and showed greater urgency in their approach. They tightened their defence, improved their offensive execution and managed to reduce the deficit as they pushed for a late comeback. The Stormers won the final quarter 20-15, but the early advantage created by JT proved too significant to erase.

The Jaguars remained composed under pressure, managing the closing stages effectively to secure the opening victory of the best-of-five semifinal matchup. The result gives coach Suudi Ulanga’s side an important psychological boost as they seek to return to the championship series.

Leading JT’s charge was Sarah Ageno, who produced a standout performance with a powerful double-double of 17 points and 14 rebounds. Her dominance in the paint provided the Jaguars with stability throughout the game, while her rebounding effort limited Magic Stormers’ second-chance opportunities.

Ageno was well supported by Brenda Kayaga and Aziida Nabayunga, who contributed 16 and 14 points respectively. Their offensive output ensured JT maintained scoring consistency, particularly during moments when Magic attempted to shift the momentum in their favour.

Playmaker Shakirah Nanvubya also played a crucial role in JT’s success, controlling the tempo and creating opportunities for her teammates. She finished with four points, six rebounds and 10 assists, highlighting her influence beyond the scoring column.

Magic Stormers had notable contributions from Eve Grace Namuli and Daphine Adong, who scored 17 and 15 points respectively. However, despite their individual efforts, the Stormers struggled to overcome JT’s strong first-half performance and could not complete their comeback bid.

The Jaguars’ ability to stretch the floor proved decisive, with JT knocking down nine three-pointers during the game. The long-range shooting created problems for the Stormers’ defence early on, although Magic adjusted as the contest progressed to limit further damage.

Despite the victory, JT will need to address their ball-handling issues after committing 33 turnovers, which provided Magic with extra possessions. The Stormers, meanwhile, found valuable production from their bench, which contributed 42 points, but their struggles from distance hurt their chances as they converted only four of 26 attempts from beyond the arc.

With the opening win secured, JT Lady Jaguars now lead the semifinal series 1-0. The two teams will meet again on Sunday at Lugogo for Game Two, where Magic Stormers will be aiming to respond and draw level, while the Jaguars look to strengthen their grip on the series.
