Watoto Men moved within one victory of the 2026 FUBA Division One men’s championship after beating KIU Titans 67-60 on Sunday, while Seeta High kept their women’s title hopes alive with a narrow 53-51 victory over Kampala University.
Omara Emmanuel led Watoto with 18 points as they recovered from a difficult second quarter to claim their second consecutive victory and take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five finals series. In the women’s contest, Seeta prevented Kampala University from opening up an unassailable advantage, reducing their series deficit to 2-1.
Watoto made a confident start, taking a 21-16 lead in the opening quarter after converting eight of their 12 field-goal attempts. However, their eight turnovers offered KIU opportunities to stay in contention, with the Titans scoring six points from those mistakes.
KIU capitalised in the second quarter, producing a 12-point unanswered run as Watoto endured a scoring drought lasting more than seven minutes. Edrine Mugisha eventually broke the spell with a three-pointer, sparking a brief revival for Watoto, who added six more points before the interval. Nevertheless, KIU maintained their advantage and went into half-time leading 32-30.
The contest tightened further after the break, with neither side able to establish sustained control. The lead changed hands four times in a closely fought third quarter, as both teams battled for momentum in a game that remained finely balanced.
James Osinde then set up Victor Makmot for an alley-oop that lifted the atmosphere inside the arena. The excitement, however, gave way to concern when Daniel Odokonyero was assessed a disqualifying foul following a hard challenge on Makmot as he attempted a dunk. Makmot left the court and was later taken to hospital, while the incident provoked an angry reaction from spectators.
Watoto responded by taking control in the fourth quarter, opening with a 13-2 run to establish a 10-point cushion with more than five minutes remaining. KIU refused to give up, and Okumu Emmanuel’s three-pointer with about a minute left reduced the gap to three points, setting up a tense finish.
Omara answered with a timely response to preserve Watoto’s advantage, helping his side close out a 67-60 victory. His all-round contribution proved crucial, as he finished with 18 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and four steals.
Fortunate Kamugisha added 13 points for Watoto, while Makmot contributed nine points and eight rebounds in 17 minutes before leaving the game following the incident. For KIU, Richard Mutawulu led the scoring with 14 points, including four three-pointers. Ryan Akena added 11 points, while Chieng Garang finished with 10.
The result gives Watoto the upper hand after KIU won the opening game 64-59 on 14 October. Watoto responded with a 48-42 victory on 16 October before Sunday’s win put them ahead in the series. They now have an opportunity to move closer to the title in Game Four on Wednesday, while KIU must respond to keep their championship challenge alive.
In the women’s finals, Seeta High secured a hard-fought 53-51 win over Kampala University to remain in contention. The victory denied Kampala University a 3-0 series lead and cut Seeta’s deficit to 2-1, keeping the contest alive ahead of Wednesday’s fourth game.
Both series resume on Wednesday, with Watoto seeking the victory that would put them on the brink of the men’s title and Seeta aiming to draw level in the women’s competition.
