Football rewards teams that seize their opportunities, and Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC made theirs count to claim a 2-1 victory over Uganda Martyrs Lubaga WFC at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, on Sunday. Midfielder-cum-forward Agnes Nabukenya’s first-half brace proved decisive as the defending champions ended their opponents’ winning start and climbed to the top of the Finance Trust Bank FUFA Women Super League standings.

Nabukenya’s eye for goal gave Kawempe a commanding advantage before Uganda Martyrs mounted a second-half fightback. Maureen Kizza pulled one back for the visitors, setting up a tense finish, but the hosts held firm to collect maximum points and inflict Uganda Martyrs’ first defeat of the campaign.

Uganda Martyrs began with intent and nearly took the lead in the opening exchanges. Brenda Munyana’s dangerous effort was cleared off the line by Asia Nakibuuka, resulting in a corner, before Deborah Nanvule tested Kawempe goalkeeper Josephine Nambuya. Nambuya responded with an excellent save, keeping the visitors at bay as Kawempe weathered the early pressure.

The hosts gradually settled into the contest and began to threaten at the other end. Latifa Nakasi came close after connecting with a fine cross from Jovia Nakagolo, but her effort sailed over the crossbar. Captain Shakira Nyinagahirwa also threatened from another Nakagolo delivery, only to send her shot wide.

Kawempe’s growing influence eventually told in the 22nd minute when Nabukenya punished a defensive lapse by Uganda Martyrs. The midfielder-cum-forward kept her cool to slot the ball past goalkeeper Joan Namusisi, giving the hosts the breakthrough their improving performance deserved.

Uganda Martyrs sought an immediate response, but Angel Kigongo Auki sent her effort over the crossbar in the 34th minute. Kawempe remained dangerous, however, and struck again just before half-time to strengthen their grip on the match.

Right-back Samali Nakacwa launched a long throw-in into the penalty area, where Nabukenya controlled the ball on her chest before unleashing a superb half-volley past Namusisi. The excellent finish completed her brace and sent Kawempe into the break with a 2-0 lead.

Uganda Martyrs head coach Edward Kasozi Ssozi introduced Sharon Nabbowa and Maureen Kizza at the start of the second half in an attempt to revive his side’s challenge. The changes injected fresh energy into the visitors’ attack, and Nabbowa nearly made an immediate impact after weaving through the defence and setting up Auki, whose effort crashed against the upright.

The visitors continued to press, with Kizza heading narrowly wide from Auki’s corner in the 64th minute. She soon found the breakthrough, capitalising on a poor clearance by Kawempe defender Sharifah Nakimera before lifting the ball over an off-positioned Josephine Nambuya to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

The goal gave Uganda Martyrs renewed hope, and they pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages. Kawempe, however, defended their advantage while remaining dangerous going forward. Latifa Nakasi fired narrowly wide, while another late opportunity saw Anita Namata’s cross find Nakagolo, whose effort went over the bar.

Kawempe ultimately did enough to protect their lead and secure a valuable victory. For Uganda Martyrs, missed opportunities and defensive errors proved costly, particularly after their promising start to the contest.

The result extended Kawempe’s strong record against their Lubaga-based opponents. The defending champions had won seven of their previous 10 league meetings, drawn once and lost twice. They also completed a league double over Uganda Martyrs last season, winning 1-0 away before recording a 3-0 home victory on their way to the league title.

Elsewhere on Matchday Three, St Noa Girls FC defeated Jinja United 3-0, while She Corporate FC beat She Maroons by the same scoreline. Rines SS edged Amus College School 2-1, while Makerere University and KCCA Women played out a goalless draw. Lady Doves and URA Ladies also shared the points after a 0-0 stalemate.

Attention now turns to the next round of fixtures. Uganda Martyrs will seek an immediate return to winning ways when they host She Corporate FC on Friday, 23 October 2026. Kawempe, meanwhile, travel to Bukedea on Saturday, 24 October, to face Amus College School, hoping to build on their victory and maintain their position at the top of the table.
