Roebuck Jr. Shines as City Oilers Overpower Rezlife Saints in NBL Semifinal Opener

City Oilers began their pursuit of another National Basketball League (NBL) championship on a positive note after defeating Rezlife Saints 64-54 in the opening game of their playoff semifinal series at Lugogo on Friday.

The defending champions produced a composed and experienced performance, taking advantage of a strong first-half showing to secure an early advantage in the best-of-five series. While Rezlife Saints improved significantly after the break, the damage from the opening two quarters had already placed City Oilers in a commanding position.

New signing Germaine Roebuck Jr. was the standout performer on a memorable debut, announcing his arrival with an impressive contribution after coming off the bench. The guard led all scorers with 16 points, shooting an efficient 7-for-12 from the field to provide the offensive spark that helped City Oilers maintain control of the contest.

The Oilers built their foundation for victory in the opening half, starting strongly with a 16-10 lead after the first quarter before producing a dominant second period. Their defensive discipline and improved offensive execution saw them outscore the Saints 22-10 in the second quarter, sending them into halftime with a comfortable 38-20 advantage.

Rezlife Saints refused to fold after the restart and showed why they deserved their place among the league’s top four teams. The semifinal newcomers raised their intensity on both ends of the court, attacking the basket more aggressively and limiting the Oilers’ scoring opportunities as they attempted to reduce the deficit.

Their efforts were rewarded as they won the second half 34-26, but the early setback proved too costly. City Oilers managed the closing moments effectively, using their experience to withstand the Saints’ comeback attempt and claim the opening victory.

Roebuck’s debut was complemented by another strong display from Patrick Rembert, who finished with 15 points as the champions relied on their key offensive contributors to get over the line.

For Rezlife Saints, Chris Omanye and Edrine Ekau carried much of the scoring responsibility, recording 11 points each. However, the team struggled to generate enough offensive consistency throughout the game, particularly during the opening half when City Oilers created the decisive separation.

The battle inside the paint was won by the Oilers, who collected 49 rebounds compared to Rezlife’s 43, giving them control of possession and additional scoring opportunities. Despite that advantage, City Oilers will need to improve their decision-making after committing 23 turnovers, an area Rezlife will look to exploit in the next encounter.

The Saints’ biggest challenge came from their struggles beyond the arc. They managed only five successful three-pointers from 33 attempts, making it difficult to complete their second-half comeback despite their improved defensive effort.

Rezlife Saints’ appearance in the semifinals remains a historic achievement after eliminating Sommet in the quarterfinals to reach this stage for the first time. However, they now face the difficult task of overturning the momentum against a City Oilers side chasing a record 11th league title.

The two teams will meet again on Sunday at Lugogo for Game Two, with Rezlife Saints needing a response to draw level in the series. City Oilers, meanwhile, will be aiming to extend their lead and move closer to a possible sweep as they continue their quest for another championship crown.
