Gor Mahia announced their arrival at the 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup in emphatic fashion after dismantling tournament hosts APR FC 5-0 in their opening Group A fixture at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali, Rwanda, on Friday night.
The Kenyan champions delivered a statement performance against one of the region’s most respected clubs, combining attacking efficiency with defensive discipline to secure a comfortable victory and immediately position themselves among the early favourites for the title.
From the opening whistle, Charles Akonnor’s charges looked determined to make their presence felt, controlling possession and constantly testing the APR defence.
Gor Mahia’s breakthrough arrived in the 34th minute through captain Mike Kibwage, who led by example on a night when he wore the armband.
The defender reacted quickest inside the crowded penalty area following a corner kick, forcing the ball over the line to hand K’Ogalo a deserved lead after sustained pressure.
The Nairobi-based side wasted little time in extending their advantage, with Cameroonian forward Patrick Essombe doubling the lead just a minute later. Essombe produced a composed finish from the edge of the box, firing a low and powerful strike beyond the goalkeeper after APR’s central defenders failed to react quickly enough to close down the danger.
Despite going into the break with a two-goal cushion, Gor Mahia showed no signs of slowing down after the restart. The visitors continued to press forward, with their attacking players exploiting spaces in the APR defence and keeping the hosts under constant pressure as they searched for more goals.
Their dominance was rewarded again in the 73rd minute when new signing Paul Okoth marked his arrival with a goal. The forward showed great awareness and positioning to tap the ball home from close range after a well-worked move down the left flank ended with a low cross into the danger area.
Gor Mahia’s new recruits continued to make their impact felt as another debutant, Lesley Otieno, joined the scoring party six minutes later. Otieno finished confidently to add a fourth goal, further highlighting the quality of the club’s summer recruitment and the depth available to Akonnor during the regional competition.
The final touch of a memorable evening came from Ghanaian striker Ebenezer Assifuah, who came off the bench to complete the rout in the 85th minute.
Fresh from extending his stay with K’Ogalo, Assifuah took advantage of the opportunity presented to him, putting the gloss on a dominant display with a clinical finish.
The impressive victory places Gor Mahia at the summit of Group A, ahead of Uganda’s Vipers SC on goal difference. The Kenyan giants will now look to build on their perfect start as they continue their pursuit of a place in the knockout stages of the prestigious regional tournament.
Vipers SC had earlier opened their campaign with an equally impressive performance, defeating Burundi’s Garde Republicaine 3-0 in the tournament opener. New signing Faruk Miya marked his return to the club in spectacular fashion, scoring twice to help the Ugandan side secure maximum points.
With both Gor Mahia and Vipers SC beginning the competition with convincing victories, the battle for supremacy in Group A is already shaping up to be one of the most exciting contests of the CECAFA Kagame Cup.
