The East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) Ltd, in partnership with the Buganda Kingdom, has officially commenced construction of the Kabaka Daudi Chwa II EACOP Stadium Buddu, a transformative community sports facility that is set to redefine the sporting and social landscape of Buddu County and the wider Masaka City region.
The groundbreaking ceremony marked a significant milestone in a partnership aimed at using sports as a powerful tool for youth empowerment, talent development, community cohesion, and sustainable socio-economic transformation. The state-of-the-art facility is expected to provide a platform where young people can discover, develop, and showcase their abilities while promoting healthier and more active communities.
The initiative forms part of EACOP’s Social Economic Investment (SEI) programme, particularly under the youth empowerment pillar, which focuses on deliberate and sustainable interventions designed to improve the livelihoods and overall wellbeing of communities located along the pipeline route.
Through this partnership, the Buganda Kingdom demonstrated its commitment to community development by allocating 10 acres of land for the construction of the sports centre. EACOP, on the other hand, made a substantial financial contribution towards the development of the facility, reinforcing a shared vision of creating lasting value for communities through strategic investments that extend beyond pipeline infrastructure.
When completed, the Kabaka Daudi Chwa II EACOP Stadium Buddu will serve as a hub for nurturing sporting talent, encouraging physical fitness, supporting youth programmes, and providing a venue where communities can come together through sports and other social activities. The facility is expected to play a key role in identifying and developing future stars while strengthening unity, inclusion, and community engagement across the greater Masaka region.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, the Katikkiro of Buganda, Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga, hailed the partnership as a significant investment in the Kingdom’s future, emphasizing that initiatives focused on empowering young people remain central to Buganda’s development agenda. He noted that the stadium would become a lasting symbol of opportunity, resilience, and progress for generations to come while reaffirming the Kingdom’s commitment to collaborations that directly improve the lives of its people.
“The Kingdom cherishes collaborations that address critical needs such as youth empowerment. Through Kabaka Daudi Chwa II EACOP Stadium Buddu, we are happy to work with EACOP to create a legacy of resilience, opportunity, and growth for our people,”
Mayiga said.
Echoing the Katikkiro’s remarks, EACOP Deputy Managing Director Mr. JB Habumugisha said the project demonstrates the company’s unwavering commitment to creating sustainable value in communities along the East African Crude Oil Pipeline corridor. He explained that EACOP’s investment extends beyond energy infrastructure, with deliberate efforts to support initiatives that promote sports, education, livelihoods, and long-term socio-economic transformation.
“This groundbreaking ceremony reflects our long-term commitment to advancing sustainability and socio-economic development. By supporting the sports centre, we are investing in initiatives that will deliver lasting value for communities in which we operate,“
Habumugisha said.
The leaders noted that the Kabaka Daudi Chwa II EACOP Stadium Buddu is far more than a sporting facility. It represents a shared vision between the Buganda Kingdom and EACOP to harness the power of sport as a driver of youth empowerment, community cohesion, and sustainable regional development, ensuring that the benefits of the partnership continue to impact lives for generations.
According to EACOP Ltd, the 296-kilometre pipeline traverses 10 districts and 25 sub-counties, with seven of those districts located within the Buganda Kingdom. The pipeline corridor covers 130 villages spread across four of Buganda’s 18 counties, underlining the importance of investing in communities that host one of East Africa’s largest energy infrastructure projects.
The districts within the Buganda Kingdom traversed by the pipeline include Gomba District (Gomba County), Kyankwanzi District (Singo County), Mubende District (Buwekula County), Sembabule District (Mawogola County), and Lwengo, Kyotera, and Rakai districts (Buddu County). These communities stand to benefit from EACOP’s broader Social Economic Investment initiatives, which seek to create lasting positive impacts beyond the pipeline itself.
Beyond being a modern sporting venue, the Kabaka Daudi Chwa II EACOP Stadium Buddu represents a legacy project designed to inspire future generations. By combining the Buganda Kingdom’s vision for youth development with EACOP’s commitment to sustainable community investment, the facility is expected to become a centre of sporting excellence, social inclusion, and regional development, leaving a lasting imprint on Masaka and the surrounding communities for decades to come.
