The stage is set for a fascinating National Basketball League (NBL) Playoffs semifinal showdown as City Oilers’ wealth of experience meets Rezlife Saints’ rising ambition when the two sides collide in Game One of their best-of-five series on Friday at Lugogo.
For the Oilers, the semifinal represents another opportunity to extend their remarkable legacy in Ugandan basketball. The multiple-time champions have built a reputation for thriving on the biggest occasions, and they will rely on their playoff experience, squad depth, and championship mentality as they begin another pursuit of NBL glory.
Standing in their way are Rezlife Saints, a fast-rising side eager to prove that they belong among the league’s elite. Having reached the semifinal stage after an impressive campaign, the Saints come into the series with confidence, belief, and the hunger to challenge one of the most successful teams in Ugandan basketball history.
The Oilers are expected to introduce a major addition to their playoff arsenal, with new signing Germaine Roebuck Jr. set to make his domestic league debut. The naturalised Ugandan-American small forward brings another dimension to the Oilers’ roster after joining the club during the mid-season transfer window as part of a three-player recruitment drive.
Although Roebuck is yet to feature in the Ugandan league, he is already familiar with the Oilers’ system and expectations. The forward previously represented the club during the Basketball Africa League (BAL) qualifiers in 2022, 2023, and 2024, gaining valuable continental experience while competing against some of Africa’s strongest teams.
During his BAL qualifiers appearances, Roebuck produced consistent numbers, averaging 12.5 points and 5.3 rebounds per game, demonstrating his ability to contribute offensively while providing strength and versatility on the defensive end.
Born in Illinois, USA, Roebuck arrives with a wealth of international experience gained from professional spells in Nicaragua, Portugal, Rwanda, and the United States. His arrival gives the Oilers another experienced option as they enter the most demanding stage of the season.
City Oilers booked their place in the semifinals after a commanding quarterfinal display against KCCA Panthers, sweeping the series in two games. After securing a 58-50 victory in Game One, the Oilers sealed progression with a convincing 77-61 win in Game Two, underlining their ability to control playoff situations.
The second victory highlighted the depth that has remained one of the Oilers’ biggest strengths. Joel Lukoji led the scoring charge with 14 points, while Benjamin Kawumi and Patrick Rembert added 12 points each. Landry Ndikumana and John Baptist Dauna also contributed 11 points apiece, showing that the Oilers can find scoring from multiple areas of the court.
The Oilers finished second in the regular season behind defending champions Namuwongo Blazers, but their performances throughout the campaign showed why they remain among the favourites for the title. Their combination of experienced players and emerging talent gives them one of the deepest squads in the competition.
However, Rezlife Saints will not arrive at Lugogo simply to make up the numbers. The Saints finished third during the regular season and carry the confidence of a team that has already proven it can compete with the best after defeating the Oilers during their first-round meeting.
Their journey to the semifinals was built on resilience, as they overcame Sommet in a tightly contested quarterfinal series. After pushing the contest to a decisive Game Three, Rezlife delivered when it mattered most, securing a 69-61 victory to book their place among the final four.
The Saints boast an exciting backcourt filled with creativity and scoring ability, featuring Edrine Ekau, Chris Omanye, Michael Otieno, Elvis Ssentongo, and Caleb Katumba. Their guards will be expected to set the pace, create scoring opportunities, and put pressure on an Oilers defence that has often thrived under playoff conditions.
While Rezlife’s perimeter talent provides a major threat, their biggest challenge will come against an experienced Oilers frontcourt built around size, physicality, and playoff know-how. The battle inside the paint could prove decisive as both teams look to establish control early in the series.
With the Oilers bringing championship experience and Rezlife Saints carrying the energy of a team chasing history, Game One promises a compelling clash of two different basketball journeys. One side is chasing another chapter in a decorated legacy, while the other is determined to announce its arrival among Uganda’s basketball giants.
