Football has a way of keeping history alive while offering every team a chance to rewrite it. For Makerere University WFC, Sunday’s meeting with KCCA Women FC presents an opportunity to end a frustrating run against familiar opponents and breathe new life into their league campaign.

However, standing in their way is a KCCA side that has started the season unbeaten, scored three goals and conceded none, setting the stage for a compelling contest when the 2026/27 Finance Trust Bank FUFA Women Super League resumes.

The two Kampala-based sides will meet at Kabaka Kyabaggu Stadium in Wakiso on Sunday, 18 October 2026, with kick-off scheduled for 10am. Separated by just one point after their opening two matches, both teams have valuable ground to gain as the campaign progresses, although their contrasting starts present different challenges ahead of the encounter.

KCCA occupy fourth place with four points, level with second-placed She Maroons and third-placed Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC on points and goal difference.

Makerere sit eighth with three points, sharing the same points tally and goal difference as seventh-placed URA Ladies FC. Sixth-placed She Corporate FC also have three points but boast a superior goal difference, leaving Makerere with an opportunity to climb the standings.

For KCCA, the immediate objective is to preserve their unbeaten start and maintain their position among the early contenders. Makerere, meanwhile, must rediscover their attacking sharpness, recover from their recent defeat and find a way through a defence that has yet to be breached this season.

KCCA Set the Early Pace as Makerere Seek a Response

KCCA Women FC have made an encouraging start to the campaign, combining attacking quality with defensive stability. Their opening fixture on 20th September produced an emphatic 3-0 away victory over URA Ladies FC, with Kamiyat Naigaga scoring twice and Ariho Rinah adding another goal to mark head coach Hamza Lutalo’s return with a win.

Their second outing against St Noa Girls Zana FC on 26th September proved more challenging. KCCA were unable to find a breakthrough and settled for a goalless draw, but their defensive organisation remained intact. Three goals scored and none conceded across their opening two matches have given them a goal difference of +3 and a strong foundation for the fixtures ahead.

Makerere also began their campaign on a positive note, edging Amus College WFC 1-0 on 20 September. Nabede Fungo scored the decisive goal, giving the university side three valuable points and an encouraging start to the season.

However, their momentum was interrupted six days later when they lost 2-0 to URA Ladies FC at Hamz Stadium in Nakivubo. Elizabeth Nakigozi scored in the 22nd minute before new signing Tamisi Shafiga added a second in the 35th minute, leaving Makerere with their first defeat of the campaign.

With two goals scored and three conceded, Makerere have a goal difference of -1. Their challenge now is to improve their attacking output while tightening their defence against a KCCA side that has already demonstrated its ability to punish opponents and protect a lead.

The statistics favour KCCA, but the one-point difference between the sides leaves little room for complacency. Makerere will need to be more effective in possession and clinical in front of goal, while KCCA will seek to turn their defensive confidence into another three-point result.

History Favours KCCA as Makerere Chase a First Win

History provides KCCA with an advantage heading into Sunday’s encounter, although their previous meetings have often been closely contested. Across the eight most recent league meetings, KCCA have registered three victories, while five matches have ended in draws. Makerere are yet to record a win in that sequence.

KCCA have also scored 10 goals against Makerere’s six across those eight encounters. Looking at the last eight meetings, KCCA have collected 14 points compared with Makerere’s five, further underlining the challenge facing the university side.

Their meetings last season demonstrated how difficult KCCA can be to overcome, even when Makerere make a promising start. On Saturday, 11th October 2025, Makerere captain and midfielder Josephine Ndagire scored in the third minute to give her side an early lead and raise hopes of a memorable victory.

KCCA, then competing under the Kampala Queens name, responded after the interval. Joanita Ainembabazi equalised in the 47th minute before Kamiyat Naigaga scored in the 92nd minute to complete a dramatic comeback and secure a 2-1 victory.

The return fixture on Sunday, 17th May 2026, produced a different outcome as the teams played out a goalless draw at Nsibirwa Ground in Makerere. That result showed that the university side could contain KCCA’s attacking threat when their defensive organisation held firm.

Makerere will draw encouragement from that stalemate as they prepare for another meeting with their familiar opponents. However, ending their winless run will require more than a determined defensive display. They must also find the attacking quality to turn a competitive performance into a historic breakthrough.

Makerere’s opening two matches have exposed both their potential and the areas requiring improvement. Their narrow victory over Amus College demonstrated their ability to grind out a result, but the subsequent defeat to URA highlighted the importance of maintaining defensive concentration and creating more consistent attacking opportunities.

Fungo remains central to Makerere’s attacking plans after scoring their only goal of the season so far. The university side will need to provide her with better service and support if they are to trouble KCCA’s defence and improve their goalscoring return.

KCCA, meanwhile, have already shown that they possess the attacking quality to make opponents pay for defensive mistakes. Their three-goal victory over URA highlighted their threat in the final third, while the clean sheet against St Noa demonstrated their ability to remain difficult to break down.

The goalless draw against St Noa also revealed an area KCCA will want to improve. Although their defence has been difficult to breach, converting attacking opportunities into goals will be essential if they are to continue collecting maximum points and maintain pressure on the teams above them.

With league football resuming, both sides have an opportunity to build momentum. KCCA will seek to rediscover their scoring touch, while Makerere must respond to their recent defeat with a performance that combines defensive resilience and greater attacking ambition.

The Players Who Could Decide the Contest

Fungo has already proved decisive for Makerere, scoring the goal that secured their opening-day victory over Amus College. As the university side’s only goalscorer after two matches, she will carry considerable responsibility as they attempt to breach KCCA’s unbeaten defence.

Her movement and ability to take advantage of scoring opportunities could prove crucial, particularly against opponents who have conceded no goals this season. Makerere will need to create the right conditions for her to influence the contest, with support from the midfield and the wide areas likely to be important.

Captain Josephine Ndagire will have a major role in the battle for midfield control. Her leadership and influence in possession could help Makerere challenge a KCCA midfield featuring Teddy Najjuma, new signing Yuster Kayesu and Ariho Rinah.

Ndagire also has a history of making an impact in this fixture. Her early goal in the October 2025 meeting gave Makerere hope before KCCA fought back to win. The university side will be looking to their captain once again to provide leadership, connect defence with attack and help them compete more effectively in the middle of the pitch.

Former Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC winger Halimah Kampi could offer Makerere an important attacking outlet in wide areas. Her ability to stretch the opposition defence and create openings may help the university side find space against a KCCA team that has started the season strongly.

Left-back Winnie Nakanwagi will also be important as Makerere attempt to balance defensive security with attacking support. Her positioning and decision-making could help prevent KCCA from exploiting the wide areas while providing an additional option when the university side move forward.

Naigaga heads into the match as one of KCCA’s principal attacking threats after scoring twice against URA on the opening day. Her ability to find scoring positions makes her a player Makerere must watch closely, particularly when KCCA work the ball into dangerous areas around the penalty box.

Ainembabazi, meanwhile, will be eager to score her first league goal of the season. She returns to club action following her involvement with the Crested Cranes during the recently concluded Olympic qualifiers against Zambia, starting both matches.

Uganda won the home leg 2-1 but lost the tie on aggregate. Ainembabazi’s international involvement adds further interest to her return, and Sunday’s encounter provides another opportunity for her to contribute to KCCA’s attacking ambitions. She also scored in KCCA’s 2-1 victory over Makerere last October, giving her an encouraging memory to draw upon.

KCCA captain and defender Jamila Nabulime will be central to the visitors’ efforts to preserve their impressive defensive record. Two consecutive clean sheets have provided a strong platform for the team, and maintaining that organisation will be essential against a Makerere side determined to respond.

Nabulime’s leadership at the back will be particularly important if the university side increase their attacking pressure through Fungo and Kampi. Keeping the defensive line organised and limiting clear scoring opportunities could prove decisive in determining whether KCCA extend their run without conceding.

The midfield contest could shape the outcome of Sunday’s encounter. New signing Yuster Kayesu will be looking to strengthen KCCA’s options in the centre of the pitch, while Rinah brings an attacking threat after scoring against URA on the opening matchday.

Najjuma will also have an important role in helping KCCA retain possession and disrupt Makerere’s attempts to build attacks through Ndagire. If the visitors establish control in midfield, they could create more opportunities for Naigaga and Ainembabazi while forcing Makerere to devote greater attention to defending.

Three Points Could Shift the Early League Picture

For KCCA Women FC, victory would take them to seven points from three matches and strengthen their position among the early contenders. Extending their unbeaten start would reinforce the confidence gained from their opening results and demonstrate their ability to maintain consistency as the competition progresses.

A draw would move KCCA to five points, while defeat would leave them on four and allow Makerere to draw level with them on points. With several teams closely grouped in the standings, the outcome could influence the early shape of the league table.

Makerere have an equally important opportunity to improve their position. Victory would take them to six points and provide an immediate response to their defeat against URA. Three points would also give the university side renewed confidence and strengthen their platform for the fixtures ahead.

A draw would move Makerere to four points, while defeat would leave them on three after three matches. The university side will therefore be eager to take advantage of the opportunity, particularly as they seek to overcome their historical struggles against KCCA.

Beyond the points on offer, Sunday’s encounter represents a test of consistency and ambition for both teams. KCCA must show that their encouraging start can develop into sustained progress, while Makerere need to demonstrate that they can recover from setbacks and compete against opponents with stronger early-season records.

Can Makerere Finally Break KCCA’s Hold?

KCCA Women FC enter the contest with the stronger early-season statistics, an unbeaten record and a defence that has yet to concede. Their attacking options, led by Naigaga and Ainembabazi, give them a clear threat in the final third, while their defensive stability provides a solid platform from which to pursue another victory.

Makerere, however, have the motivation of responding to their recent defeat and the prospect of ending their winless run against their opponents. Their chances will depend on how effectively Ndagire and her midfield colleagues compete for possession, how much support Fungo receives in attack and whether their defence can withstand KCCA’s pressure.

The historical record may favour KCCA, but last season’s goalless draw at Nsibirwa Ground offers a reminder that Makerere can frustrate their opponents. The university side must now turn that resilience into a more effective attacking performance if they are to secure the breakthrough they seek.

The opening exchanges at Kabaka Kyabaggu Stadium could prove important as both teams attempt to establish their rhythm. KCCA will look to use their attacking quality and defensive confidence to control the contest, while Makerere must combine defensive discipline with the courage to commit players forward and create meaningful scoring opportunities.

For KCCA, the mission is to protect their unbeaten start and remain among the league’s leading sides. For Makerere, it is a chance to challenge history, reclaim their momentum and announce themselves as a team capable of troubling the early contenders. Sunday’s encounter promises a compelling test of both sides’ ambitions in the 2026/27 Finance Trust Bank FUFA Women Super League.
