Uganda Premier League giants KCCA FC have completed the signing of striker Charles Lwanga, bringing the forward back to Lugogo ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
The return of the prolific attacker signals the club’s determination to assemble a competitive squad capable of challenging for domestic honours after an eventful transfer window. Lwanga rejoins the Kasasiro Boys as a free agent, adding proven experience and an established goalscoring record to Brian Ssenyondo’s attacking options.
The move marks an emotional homecoming for the striker, who previously wore the KCCA shirt before departing in July 2023 to join SC Villa. His departure came at a time when he had already established himself as one of the club’s most dependable attacking players, and his return represents the continuation of a journey that many supporters had hoped would one day resume. With familiar surroundings awaiting him, Lwanga now has another opportunity to make a lasting impact at Lugogo.
Following the expiration of his contract at SC Villa, Lwanga became one of the most sought-after free agents on the Ugandan transfer market. His availability attracted considerable attention from clubs eager to secure an experienced striker capable of delivering goals consistently. Ultimately, KCCA acted decisively to bring back a player who already understands the club’s expectations, philosophy and winning culture.
During his spell at SC Villa, Lwanga enjoyed one of the finest moments of his career by helping the Jogoos secure the 2023/24 Uganda Premier League title. The championship triumph added a significant honour to his résumé and further cemented his reputation as a player capable of performing on the biggest domestic stage. Despite his contribution to Villa’s success, both parties eventually went separate ways after the striker chose not to renew his stay with the record Ugandan champions.
Lwanga’s previous stint at KCCA remains fondly remembered by the club’s faithful. In his debut campaign at Lugogo, he emerged as the team’s leading scorer after finding the back of the net 12 times across all competitions. His pace, intelligent movement and clinical finishing quickly made him one of the standout performers in the squad, qualities the club now hopes will once again inspire its attacking play.
Speaking after sealing his return, the striker expressed delight at rejoining the club where he previously enjoyed success. Lwanga revealed his determination to write a new chapter in his career, emphasizing his ambition to work alongside the current squad and coaching staff while competing for major honours. He acknowledged the quality within the team and welcomed the healthy competition that he believes will drive everyone to higher performance levels.
“I am happy to be back, and I want to rewrite my story here. I am eager to work with the players and coaches at the club. They are top quality players here, so I expect the competition levels to be up, and I am hopeful I can achieve a lot of success with this club.”
Lwanga remarked
The race for Lwanga’s signature was far from straightforward. Kitara FC, fresh from lifting the Stanbic Uganda Cup, had also made a serious attempt to recruit the forward. The Hoima-based club reportedly presented the striker with a two-year contract, reflecting how highly they valued his services. However, after weighing his options, Lwanga ultimately chose a return to Lugogo over the alternative offers on the table.
For KCCA head coach Brian Ssenyondo, the acquisition represents far more than simply adding another striker. The tactician believes Lwanga possesses attributes that perfectly complement the style of football he intends to implement, particularly his explosive speed and proven ability to convert chances in the Uganda Premier League. Ssenyondo is confident the forward will significantly improve the team’s attacking efficiency.
The coach also highlighted the importance of bringing back a player who already understands the identity and culture of KCCA. According to Ssenyondo, Lwanga’s familiarity with the club environment will allow him to settle quickly while providing leadership within the dressing room. His hunger for success, combined with his experience, is expected to inspire teammates as the club pursues its objectives for the upcoming season.
“Lwanga possesses a combination of raw pace and a proven goal scoring instinct in this league. We know exactly how we want to deploy his strengths to make our front line more lethal. He understands the culture of this club, and his hunger to achieve big things aligns perfectly with our vision for the season.”
Ssenyondo revealed
Lwanga’s arrival continues a busy rebuilding process at Lugogo as KCCA reshape their squad ahead of the new campaign. The club has been active in the transfer market, focusing on recruiting players capable of restoring the team to the summit of Ugandan football. Every signing appears carefully selected to fit Ssenyondo’s tactical vision while strengthening key areas of the squad.
The returning striker will also reunite with former teammate Elvis Ngonde, who earlier this week completed his own move to KCCA on a three-year contract. Their previous understanding on the pitch could prove valuable as the club seeks to build a cohesive attacking unit capable of competing for trophies. Their reunion adds another intriguing storyline to KCCA’s preparations for the new season.
Ngonde’s arrival came after the departure of influential midfielder Joel Sserunjogi, who recently completed a transfer to Vipers SC. Together with Lwanga’s return, KCCA have sent a clear statement of intent that they are determined to remain among the leading contenders in Ugandan football. As anticipation builds ahead of the new campaign, supporters will hope the familiar face of Charles Lwanga can once again deliver the goals that ignite another successful era at Lugogo.
