Morocco national football team continued their remarkable rise on the global stage after cruising to a commanding 3-0 victory over Canada national football team in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 on Saturday. Inspired by a sensational brace from Azzedine Ounahi, the Atlas Lions secured their place in the quarter-finals for the second consecutive World Cup, becoming the first African nation to reach the last eight on more than one occasion.
The victory further cemented Morocco’s status as one of the tournament’s strongest contenders after their groundbreaking run to the semi-finals in 2022.
The triumph was another milestone for a Moroccan side that continues to rewrite African football history. Having become the first team from the continent to reach a World Cup semi-final four years ago, the Atlas Lions have now demonstrated that their previous success was no fluke. Their blend of tactical discipline, technical excellence and growing tournament experience has transformed them into one of the world’s most respected international teams, capable of competing with and defeating elite opposition on the biggest stage.
Canada, however, entered the encounter full of belief after producing the finest World Cup campaign in their history. The tournament co-hosts had earned their first-ever victory in the knockout rounds by edging South Africa 1-0, reaching the Round of 16 in only their third FIFA World Cup appearance. Their impressive journey captivated a nation traditionally more passionate about ice hockey, but standing in their way was an experienced Moroccan side determined to continue making history.
The opening half developed into a fiercely contested tactical battle, with both teams displaying discipline and determination in equal measure. Canada matched Morocco’s physical intensity while frustrating their attacking rhythm, ensuring clear-cut chances remained limited before the interval. Every challenge carried significance as both sides fought relentlessly for control, setting the stage for an absorbing second-half contest.
Morocco eventually found the breakthrough five minutes after the restart through a moment of outstanding quality. Defender Achraf Hakimi delivered a well-crafted free-kick that found Ounahi, who unleashed a superb right-footed strike from outside the penalty area. The effort travelled through a crowded box before nestling into the bottom-right corner, giving the goalkeeper no chance and handing the Atlas Lions a deserved lead. With confidence flowing after the opening goal, Morocco gradually took complete control of the match. Their midfield dictated possession with greater authority while Canada’s defensive structure began to show signs of fatigue.
Ounahi then produced another decisive contribution in the 82nd minute when he calmly converted a precise pass from Brahim Díaz, firing home from inside the box to double Morocco’s advantage and effectively end Canada’s hopes of a comeback.
The Atlas Lions completed a dominant performance deep into stoppage time when Soufiane Rahimi added a third goal with a composed finish. The late strike reflected Morocco’s attacking efficiency and ensured the scoreline accurately represented their superiority throughout the second half. It also sparked jubilant celebrations among the Moroccan supporters, who sensed another memorable World Cup chapter unfolding before their eyes.
Despite the defeat, Canada continued to battle until the final whistle and created a handful of late opportunities. Jonathan David saw a dangerous free-kick fly over the crossbar before Tajon Buchanan forced an excellent diving save from goalkeeper Yassine Bounou. Born in Canada to Moroccan parents, Bounou delivered another assured performance, making three important saves to preserve his clean sheet against the country of his birth.
The encounter was also remembered for its physical intensity, with eight yellow cards shown during a fiercely contested affair. Four cautions were issued to each side, while tensions boiled over in the 40th minute when Hakimi and Richie Laryea became involved in a brief confrontation after exchanging shoves. Morocco’s only setback came earlier in the match when midfielder Ismael Saibari was forced off through injury in the 22nd minute.
Morocco will now shift their attention to a quarter-final showdown against the winner of the Round of 16 clash between Paraguay national football team and France national football team at Boston Stadium. With history already made once again, the Atlas Lions have every reason to believe they can extend their extraordinary World Cup journey.
As for Canada, their campaign ends in disappointment, but their historic run has laid a strong foundation for the future and demonstrated that they are becoming an increasingly competitive force in international football.
