Nantongo Switches Clubs in China as Shaanxi Zhidan Move is Confirmed

Uganda’s international defender Aisha Nantongo has embarked on a fresh chapter in her professional career after completing a transfer to Shaanxi Zhidan Women Football Club, a side competing in the Chinese Women’s Super League.

The move sees her depart fellow league rivals Changchun Dazhong Zhuoyue WFC, where she had continued to build her profile since arriving in China, further strengthening her presence in one of the fastest-growing women’s football competitions in the world.

Nantongo has committed her future to Shaanxi Zhidan WFC on a contract that runs until the conclusion of the current Chinese Women’s Super League season. The deal represents an opportunity for the Ugandan defender to consolidate her experience in Asia while playing a more influential role in a team that is seeking stability and progress in a highly competitive league environment.

A naturally versatile footballer, Nantongo brings tactical intelligence and defensive flexibility to her new club, where she is capable of operating both as a central defender and as a defensive midfielder. Her ability to read the game, break up opposition play, and initiate build-ups from deep positions is expected to add balance and structure to Shaanxi Zhidan’s squad. She will also wear the number 14 shirt as she integrates into her new surroundings.

Her transfer further cements her reputation as a pioneering figure in Ugandan women’s football on the global stage. Nantongo made history last year when she became the first Ugandan player to feature in the Chinese Women’s Super League after joining Changchun Dazhong Zhuoyue from Egyptian side FC Masar, a milestone that underscored her steady rise through different competitive football systems across Africa, Europe, and Asia.

Before her breakthrough in China and North Africa, Nantongo developed her early football foundation in Uganda, where she featured for Kawempe Muslim, St. Noa Girls, and London College, institutions known for producing some of the country’s finest female football talent.

She also gained valuable international exposure during her time with Danish outfit Aalborg BK, an experience that broadened her tactical understanding and adaptability in European football.Her reputation was further enhanced during her spell with FC Masar, where she played a key role in the club’s impressive run in the CAF Women’s Champions League. Nantongo’s performances contributed to FC Masar securing a bronze medal finish, a result that highlighted her composure in high-pressure continental fixtures and her ability to compete at an elite level.

At Shaanxi Zhidan WFC, Nantongo joins a team that endured a difficult campaign last season, narrowly avoiding relegation by a single position. The club is now aiming for a more stable and improved performance, with expectations that her defensive experience and leadership qualities will help strengthen their backline and bring greater consistency throughout the season.

She will also be one of only two foreign players at the club, alongside Nigerian forward Alice Ogebe, a partnership that is expected to play a significant role in shaping the team’s attacking and defensive balance.

Nantongo could make her debut as early as Sunday, July 5, when Shaanxi Zhidan WFC travel to Beijing Women FC, a fixture that offers an early opportunity for her to announce her arrival in new colours.
