12 Teams Set for 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup as Kigali Prepares for a Month of High-Stakes Regional Football
The 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup is officially set to take centre stage in East and Central African football after the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) confirmed that 12 clubs will compete in this year’s edition.
Scheduled to be hosted in Kigali, Rwanda, from July 24th to August 8th, the tournament is expected to once again deliver a compelling blend of rivalry, rising talent, and established regional dominance as clubs battle not only for the trophy but also for continental recognition.
One of the most anticipated storylines of the tournament is the return of Tanzanian heavyweights Simba SC, who are making a comeback to the CECAFA Kagame Cup after a seven-year absence.
The six-time champions remain the most successful club in the competition’s history, a record that continues to underline their regional pedigree. However, their most recent appearance ended in heartbreak in 2018, when they suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat in the final, a result that will undoubtedly fuel their determination to reclaim dominance and restore their legacy on the regional stage.
Uganda’s challenge in the tournament will be led by reigning Uganda Premier League champions Vipers SC, a side that has steadily grown into one of the country’s most consistent performers on the domestic and regional scene.
Their qualification reflects a season of dominance at home, and they will now be tasked with translating that form into success against some of the strongest clubs in East and Central Africa. For Vipers SC, the tournament presents both an opportunity for redemption and a platform to further elevate Ugandan club football.
The host nation, Rwanda, will enjoy the advantage of having two strong representatives in the competition, with both APR FC and Rayon Sports flying the country’s flag. APR FC, known for their discipline and tactical strength, will look to assert their authority on home soil, while Rayon Sports bring a passionate fan base and attacking flair that often thrives in high-pressure environments. Together, these two sides are expected to make Rwanda one of the most formidable nations in the tournament.
The competition will also feature some of the region’s most established and battle-tested clubs, including Kenya’s Gor Mahia FC, whose rich history and continental experience make them perennial contenders in any regional competition. They will be joined by Sudan’s traditional powerhouses Al Hilal SC and El Merriekh SC, both of whom bring decades of experience and fierce rivalry into the tournament.
Adding further depth are Tanzania’s emerging force Singida Black Stars FC and South Sudan’s ambitious side Jamus SC, a team increasingly known for its growing investment and competitive ambition.The diversity of the competition is further enriched by representatives from across the region, including KVZ FC from Zanzibar, Mogadishu City FC from Somalia, and FC Garde Républicaine representing Djibouti.
Each of these sides brings a unique football identity and adds depth to a tournament that continues to expand its regional footprint, giving lesser-known teams a chance to compete against some of the continent’s most established clubs.
However, the absence of Ethiopia, Burundi, and Eritrea from this year’s edition remains notable, as these nations have traditionally contributed to the competitive richness of the CECAFA region. Their absence slightly narrows the geographical spread of the tournament but also heightens the responsibility on the participating nations to carry the regional football narrative forward in their place.
All matches are set to be staged at two of Kigali’s most iconic football venues, Amahoro National Stadium and King Pele Stadium, both of which are expected to provide a vibrant and electrifying atmosphere throughout the competition.
With passionate supporters, intense rivalries, and continental aspirations converging in one city, Kigali is poised to host a tournament that promises drama, excitement, and unforgettable football moments from start to finish.
