Vipers Begin Title Defence Against Entebbe UPPC at Kitende

The 2026/27 StarTimes Premier League season gets underway on Friday evening, with reigning champions Vipers SC opening their title defence against neighbours Entebbe UPPC at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende. The encounter, scheduled for 8pm and live on Sanyuka Prime TV, brings the long-awaited return of top-flight football and immediately places the defending champions under the spotlight. For Vipers, it is an opportunity to begin their pursuit of another league crown on a positive note, while Entebbe UPPC will be eager to spoil the champions’ opening night.

Vipers approach the league opener with confidence after already collecting silverware in the early stages of the new campaign. The eight-time champions defeated Kitara 3-1 in the Super Cup last week, producing an assured performance that provided an encouraging indication of their competitive readiness. The victory also gave Denis Lavagne and his players a valuable opportunity to test themselves in a competitive environment before the league officially got underway, while strengthening their belief ahead of a demanding title defence.

The Super Cup success followed an extensive seven-week pre-season programme during which Lavagne worked to prepare the squad physically, tactically and mentally for the challenges ahead. The French tactician has used the preparation period to assess his options, develop his preferred style and build greater understanding among the players. Lavagne has made no secret of his desire for a winning start, recognising that early momentum can prove important in a long championship race. “We have had a good week after winning the Super Cup and we want to build on that, start with a win as we aim to defend the title,” he said. While his absence leaves the champions without one of their established defensive options, his move also represents another opportunity for a Vipers player to progress to a higher level of competition abroad.

Standing in Vipers’ way on opening night is an Entebbe UPPC side that enjoyed an encouraging return to the Premier League last season. Formerly known as Gaddafi FC, the Printers exceeded expectations under Abdallah Mubiru by finishing fifth, a result that demonstrated their competitiveness after returning to Uganda’s top division. Their impressive campaign has raised expectations around the club, although the reward for that success is a difficult opening assignment against the reigning champions at Kitende.

The recent history between the two clubs gives Vipers the psychological advantage heading into Friday’s encounter. The Venoms defeated Entebbe UPPC in both league meetings last season, winning 1-0 at Bugonga before completing the double with a 2-0 victory at Kitende. Overall, Entebbe UPPC have recorded just one victory against Vipers in their head-to-head meetings, while the champions have won six and another encounter ended in a draw.

Mubiru will nevertheless believe his side can produce a stronger challenge this time around, despite facing a number of selection concerns. Isa Bugembe and Ambrose Kigozi are dealing with fitness issues after missing significant portions of the pre-season, while Anwar Ntege, Grant Matsiko, Ahmed Amayo and Julius Poloto are also sidelined through injury.
