Paul ‘McGayver’ Odong | Nam Blazers

Paul “McGyver” Odong delivered one of the greatest individual performances in the history of the National Basketball League (NBL), producing a record-breaking 53-point explosion to inspire the Namuwongo Blazers to a commanding 110-64 victory over Kampala Rockets at ABJA Park, Nalya on Wednesday.

The explosive guard etched his name into Ugandan basketball folklore after setting a new NBL record for the most three-pointers made in a single game, draining an astonishing 15 shots from beyond the arc. As if that was not enough, Odong also established a new league benchmark for the highest individual points tally ever recorded in a single NBL contest, finishing with a remarkable 53 points.

It was a performance that left fans in awe and opponents helpless, as the Blazers star turned the contest into his personal showcase. Odong’s brilliance extended beyond scoring, with the sharpshooter completing a double-double after collecting 14 rebounds to crown a truly unforgettable evening.

Despite the eventual one-sided scoreline, Kampala Rockets showed resilience in the opening quarter and matched the Blazers for long stretches. Francis Kasinde’s three-point jumper at the buzzer capped a competitive first period, with the Rockets trailing by just a single point at 24-23.

However, the game began to tilt decisively in the second quarter as Odong caught fire from long range. The deadly shooter buried four three-pointers in the period, spearheading a devastating offensive surge that saw the Blazers stretch their advantage to 55-38 by halftime.

Any hopes of a Rockets comeback disappeared after the break. The Blazers maintained their relentless pace, thriving in transition and moving the ball with precision. Their defensive intensity also reached another level, forcing mistakes and converting them into easy baskets. By the end of the third quarter, the lead had ballooned to 31 points, effectively putting the contest beyond doubt.

The final stanza was a complete exhibition of Namuwongo’s dominance. Kampala Rockets were restricted to just nine points in the quarter as the Blazers tightened the screws defensively while continuing to pile on the points at the other end. The emphatic 46-point victory underlined the gulf between the two sides on the night.

While Odong stole the headlines, he received strong support from his teammates. Nyemeck Kevin registered an impressive double-double of 12 points and 15 rebounds, controlling the boards throughout the contest, while Kasereka Tembo chipped in with 15 points.

For the Rockets, Francis Kasinde fought valiantly and completed a double-double with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Gideon Kasasa also made a notable contribution with 17 points, but their efforts were overshadowed by Odong’s historic shooting display and the Blazers’ collective dominance.

The victory further strengthens Namuwongo Blazers’ position among the league’s title contenders, but the night will be remembered primarily for Odong’s breathtaking record-breaking performance.

In a league that has witnessed countless memorable moments over the years, the “McGyver” masterpiece ranks among the finest ever produced, setting a new standard for individual excellence in Ugandan basketball.
