KCCA FC finally found the victory they had been searching for, defeating Kataka FC 1-0 at MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo, on Wednesday to register their first StarTimes Uganda Premier League win of the season. Emmanuel Anyama supplied the decisive finish after the break as the Kasasiro Boys turned a tense encounter into a much-needed three-point haul on home soil.
The result marked a welcome turnaround for KCCA, who had endured a frustrating opening to their league campaign. Defeats against NEC FC and Express FC were followed by a goalless draw with newly promoted Kigezi HomeBoyz, leaving the Lugogo side still searching for both their first goal and first victory before Wednesday’s encounter.
Kataka, meanwhile, will look back at the match with frustration after failing to capitalise on several promising opportunities. The visitors showed enough attacking threat to cause problems for the KCCA defence, but their inability to turn openings into goals ultimately proved costly as they left Lugogo without a point.
The best of Kataka’s early opportunities fell to Ali Ssentamu in the 20th minute. A poorly played back pass from Etienne Katanga presented Ssentamu with a golden opportunity, and the Kataka forward managed to get his effort beyond the goalkeeper. However, with the goal at his mercy, his attempt drifted narrowly wide, allowing KCCA to survive what could have been a damaging early setback.
KCCA gradually grew into the contest as the half progressed, with Sammy Raynald Ssebaduka emerging as one of their most influential players in attack. The forward came close to breaking the deadlock in the 33rd minute when he connected with a delivery inside the area, but his header rattled the woodwork before Kataka defender Michael Olinga reacted quickly to clear the danger.
The hosts were inches away from taking the lead again seven minutes later. Ssebaduka was once more involved in the build-up, sending a dangerous cross into the box for Ibrahim Kasule. The midfielder met the delivery with a non stop tap in , but the effort struck the woodwork, leaving KCCA wondering how they had not found the breakthrough.
While KCCA had been denied by the frame of the goal, Kataka’s missed chances continued to stand out as the first half wore on. The visitors had shown they could get into dangerous positions, but their finishing let them down when it mattered, allowing KCCA to remain level and eventually reach the interval with the score still 0-0.
The second half brought renewed urgency from both sides, but it was KCCA who eventually made their opportunity count. Ssebaduka once again played a key role, delivering a well-weighted ball into the path of Anyama, who kept his composure to finish the move and send the home side into a 1-0 lead.
The goal changed the complexion of the contest, with Kataka now forced to take greater risks in search of an equaliser. KCCA, aware of the importance of protecting their slender advantage, became more disciplined in their approach as head coach Brian Ssenyondo made tactical adjustments to give his side greater defensive stability.
Kataka continued to push forward, but the visitors could not find the finishing touch required to rescue a point. Their earlier wastefulness had already denied them the opportunity to establish control of the game, and KCCA took advantage by defending their lead with greater composure during the closing stages.
When the final whistle sounded, KCCA had secured a victory that was more valuable than the scoreline suggested. The three points ended their wait for a league win, while the clean sheet provided another positive from a match in which the Kasasiro Boys showed greater efficiency when the decisive opportunity arrived.
For Kataka, the defeat will be particularly difficult to digest given the chances they created during the contest. Their inability to punish KCCA when opportunities came their way ultimately separated the two teams, leaving the visitors still searching for their first victory of the campaign.
KCCA will now look to build on the result when they return to league action against URA FC on October 9. The victory gives the Kasasiro Boys a timely boost as they seek to climb the table and put their difficult start firmly behind them.
Kataka, meanwhile, will have an opportunity to respond on October 7 when they welcome SC Villa. After a match in which their attacking opportunities went unrewarded, the challenge will be to turn those chances into goals and points in their next outing.
Elsewhere on Matchday Four, Police FC secured a 2-0 away victory against Lugazi FC, while Mbarara City and Entebbe UPPC shared the points following a goalless draw in Kamwenge.
The matchday continues on Thursday, with Express FC hosting Kitara FC under the floodlights at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, while Maroons FC travel to face UPDF FC in the early kick-off.
