The Uganda Basketball Players Association (UBPA) has officially launched the Uganda Basketball Players Association All-Star Fest, setting the stage for an event that seeks to celebrate the country’s basketball talent while addressing one of the most important, yet often overlooked, chapters in an athlete’s journey , life after competitive sport. With the theme “After the Buzzer: Life Beyond the Court”, the initiative is designed to shift attention beyond performances, trophies and statistics to the future of the players who dedicate years of their lives to the game.
The inaugural All-Star Fest is scheduled for 9 October 2026 at the Lugogo MTN Arena, where members of Uganda’s basketball fraternity will converge for a celebration that promises to combine the excitement of the sport with meaningful conversations about players’ welfare and future prospects. The choice of theme reflects the association’s desire to encourage athletes to begin thinking about life beyond basketball while they are still active, rather than waiting until their playing careers have come to an end.
The message behind the initiative is clear, the game does not end when the final horn sounds. While athletes spend years developing their skills, competing at different levels and representing their clubs and country, the transition into life after sport can bring a completely different set of challenges. The UBPA is therefore seeking to create greater awareness about the importance of preparing players with knowledge, opportunities and support systems that can help them navigate that transition.
The launch was attended by a number of active basketball players, including Tonny Drilleba, Titus Lawal, Ngobi Mark and Sarah Ageno, among others. Their participation added a strong player perspective to the discussions, demonstrating that conversations about the future of basketball cannot be separated from the experiences and aspirations of those currently competing on the court.
The presence of established figures and basketball legends also added weight to the message of collective responsibility within the sport. Norman Blick stressed the importance of bringing different generations of players together to recognise the work of the players’ association and, more importantly, ensure that athletes are not left to face the realities of life after sport on their own.
“We’re standing together as legends to appreciate the players association and ensure every Ugandan player is prepared for life after the final whistle,”
Blick said, highlighting the need for solidarity and long-term planning within Uganda’s basketball community.

The launch was further graced by Ambrose Tashobya, Chairperson of the National Council of Sports, who emphasised the significance of having a functional players’ association capable of representing and supporting athletes. Tashobya encouraged basketball players to embrace initiatives that seek to improve their welfare, noting that organised player representation can provide a platform for athletes to address challenges collectively and explore opportunities that can positively influence their lives.
Tashobya also called for honest reflection on the experiences of players who have already completed their competitive careers, as well as those who remain active in the sport. He stressed the importance of examining areas where the basketball fraternity may have fallen short in supporting athletes and using those lessons to develop stronger systems for the future.
“We rock this game together to check where we didn’t do what was supposed to be done, to see what support system we can put in place for the players who have finished and also those who are still active in the sport,”
Tashobya said, pointing to the need for a support structure that caters for athletes throughout their sporting journey rather than only during their peak competitive years.

The “After the Buzzer” theme consequently gives the All-Star Fest a purpose that stretches beyond the spectacle normally associated with an All-Star event. It creates space for conversations around career development, education, financial preparedness, leadership, entrepreneurship and other opportunities that can help athletes establish meaningful lives and careers outside competitive basketball.
For current players, the initiative serves as a reminder that preparation for the future should begin long before retirement. An athlete can enjoy a successful playing career while simultaneously acquiring skills, building professional networks and exploring opportunities that can provide continuity when the demands of competitive sport eventually change.
For former players and legends, the event provides an opportunity to share experiences, lessons and perspectives with the younger generation. Their stories can help active players understand both the rewards and challenges associated with a sporting career while contributing to a stronger culture of mentorship and collective responsibility within Uganda’s basketball fraternity.
The All-Star Fest is therefore shaping up as more than a one-day basketball celebration. By bringing together active players, former athletes, administrators and other stakeholders, the UBPA is creating a platform where the achievements of Uganda’s basketball players can be celebrated while equally important conversations about their welfare, development and future are given the attention they deserve.
As the basketball community counts down to 9 October, the Lugogo MTN Arena will become the meeting point for a conversation that goes beyond the court. The UBPA All-Star Fest seeks to remind every player that while the final buzzer may signal the end of a game, it should never signal the end of an athlete’s opportunities, purpose or contribution to society.
The message of “After the Buzzer: Life Beyond the Court” is ultimately about preparation, solidarity and opportunity. Through the All-Star Fest, the Uganda Basketball Players Association is placing the player at the heart of the conversation and challenging the basketball fraternity to build a future where every Ugandan player is prepared not only to compete at the highest level, but also to thrive when the final whistle has been blown.
