Uganda head coach Mandy Juruny decried his side’s defensive lapses after the Silverbacks suffered a heavy 82–59 defeat to a ruthless Mali team in Saturday’s 2027 FIBA World Cup African Qualifiers.

The result not only exposed Uganda’s persistent defensive vulnerabilities but also officially extinguished their hopes of progressing to the global showpiece, leaving Juruny visibly disappointed with his team’s inability to sustain competitiveness over four quarters.

Juruny was particularly critical of Uganda’s inability to maintain structure and intensity at the back, pointing to repeated breakdowns in transition defence and poor communication as key factors behind the defeat. He admitted that while the team had moments of effort, they failed to match the physicality, discipline, and consistency required against elite opposition on the continental stage.

“We made a lot of mistakes in defence. I know we can compete better than we did today. These teams are very good. If we don’t compete with the same energy, we won’t give ourselves a chance,”

The defeat confirmed Uganda as the third team to be eliminated from from the world cup race so far, joining Madagascar and Rwanda in an early exit from the qualification race. It also underscored a broader concern for the Silverbacks, whose struggles in recent qualifying cycles have reflected a lack of consistency, execution, and composure when facing Africa’s top-ranked basketball nations.

Mali, on the other hand, continued their remarkable unbeaten march through the qualifiers, extending their perfect record to 5–0 and firmly consolidating their position at the summit of Group D. Their performance once again demonstrated a blend of tactical discipline and offensive balance, reinforcing their status as the only undefeated side in the African qualification campaign.

Beyond the result itself, Mali’s victory carried historic weight as they set a new national benchmark by registering their longest winning streak in African basketball history. Their growing dominance has been built on cohesion, depth, and adaptability, making them one of the most feared contenders in the race for Africa’s five World Cup slots.

Mali’s command of the game was reflected in their collective contribution, with all players except Mahamane Coulibaly, who logged 25 minutes and 29 seconds on court, registering at least two points. This widespread scoring distribution highlighted their offensive fluidity and ability to maintain pressure regardless of personnel on the floor.

Oumar Ballo once again stood out as a pillar of consistency, delivering a commanding double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds while anchoring Mali’s presence in the paint. His performance not only stabilized his team defensively and offensively but also embodied Mali’s philosophy of teamwork, unselfish play, and shared responsibility.

Nike Sibande played a crucial early role in setting the tone for Mali, igniting their momentum with a fast-break layup before finishing the game with 12 points. His energy and early aggression helped Mali seize control of the tempo, allowing them to dictate proceedings and steadily widen the margin throughout the contest.

Despite Uganda’s struggles, there were individual sparks of resistance, with Deng Geu leading the scoring effort with 13 points, while Robinson Opong added 10 points in a determined but ultimately insufficient showing. Their contributions offered brief moments of resistance, though they were unable to overcome Mali’s structured defence and sustained pressure.

Uganda’s overall struggles in the qualification campaign were further reflected in their broader record, now standing at 2–19 across the last two editions of the World Cup African Qualifiers. The statistic paints a difficult picture of inconsistency and highlights the long road ahead in rebuilding competitiveness at the continental level.

Uganda will now turn their attention to their final Group D fixture against Egypt on Sunday, aiming to end their campaign on a more positive note. Meanwhile, Mali prepare for a high-stakes showdown against hosts Angola, a clash that promises to test their unbeaten run and potentially define the final shape of the group standings.
