Serena Williams’ highly anticipated return to Wimbledon came to a disappointing end on Saturday after the 23-time Grand Slam champion withdrew from the women’s doubles competition because of a knee injury.

The 44-year-old American had been scheduled to partner her sister, Venus Williams, in a blockbuster first-round doubles encounter against Solana Sierra and Camila Osorio.

The Williams sisters had received a wild card entry, generating enormous excitement among fans eager to witness one of tennis’ most iconic partnerships return to the famous grass courts. However, just hours before the match, Serena announced that she would no longer be able to compete due to the injury she sustained earlier in the tournament.

The withdrawal marked an unfortunate conclusion to what had been an emotional comeback at the prestigious Grand Slam.

In a heartfelt statement, Williams expressed her disappointment over being forced to pull out.

“I’m heartbroken to have to withdraw,”

She said while sharing images showing fluid being drained from her injured knee, highlighting the seriousness of the condition.

The injury occurred during her hard-fought singles defeat to Maya Joint earlier in the week. That contest was particularly significant, as it marked Serena’s first singles appearance since the 2022 US Open, ending nearly four years away from singles competition on one of tennis’ biggest stages.

Despite the discomfort, Williams displayed the determination that has defined her legendary career by battling through three demanding sets before eventually succumbing to her opponent. Unfortunately, the swelling in her knee worsened after the match, leaving her unable to continue in the doubles draw.

Her return to Wimbledon also carried special family significance, with her daughters, Olympia and Adira, watching their mother’s comeback from the stands. However, they were only able to witness one competitive match before the injury brought her campaign to an early close.

Even so, Williams made it clear that she has no intention of ending her remarkable career just yet. Offering encouragement to her supporters, she declared, “Stay tuned to a city near you,” suggesting that she remains determined to compete again once fully recovered.

The latest setback raises fresh questions about her immediate playing schedule, with attention now turning to whether she can regain full fitness in time for the upcoming US Open later this year. While her Wimbledon comeback ended sooner than many had hoped, Serena Williams has built a career on resilience, perseverance, and remarkable comebacks.

Tennis fans around the world will now be hoping that this latest injury proves to be only a temporary obstacle as one of the sport’s greatest champions continues her pursuit of another memorable return.
