Uganda’s U17 national football team, popularly known as the Uganda Cubs, produced one of the most memorable moments in the country’s football history after securing qualification for the FIFA U17 Men’s World Cup following a thrilling victory over Ghana in Rabat, Morocco, on Saturday. The young Ugandan side displayed remarkable courage, determination, and composure under pressure as they overcame a strong Ghanaian team in a dramatic contest that kept fans on the edge of their seats from start to finish. Their qualification is being celebrated across the nation as a major milestone for Ugandan football and a sign of the growing strength of youth football development in the country.

The playoff encounter lived up to expectations as both sides battled intensely for the coveted World Cup slot. Ghana started the match brightly and silenced the Ugandan supporters in the ninth minute when Eric Gyamfi gave the West Africans an early advantage. Gyamfi finished calmly from close range, firing a low shot past Uganda goalkeeper Ashraf Lukyamuzi after a well-worked attacking move. The early setback placed Uganda under immense pressure, but the Cubs showed resilience and maturity beyond their age as they gradually regained control of the match and continued searching for an equaliser.

Uganda’s persistence finally paid off shortly before halftime when team captain Owen Mukisa produced a moment of brilliance that lifted the spirits of the entire squad. Mukisa scored directly from a corner kick, catching the Ghanaian defence and goalkeeper off guard to level the match at 1-1. The spectacular goal sparked celebrations among Ugandan fans and gave the Cubs renewed confidence heading into the second half. Mukisa’s leadership and composure throughout the match highlighted his importance to the team and demonstrated why he has emerged as one of Uganda’s brightest young football talents.

The second half began with Ghana once again pushing forward aggressively in search of another lead. Their efforts were rewarded six minutes after the restart when Abdul Latif capitalised on a costly mistake by goalkeeper Ashraf Lukyamuzi. A dangerous cutback pass slipped through the hands of the Ugandan shot-stopper, allowing Latif to tap the ball into an empty net from close range. The goal restored Ghana’s advantage and appeared to put Uganda in a difficult position as the match moved closer to its conclusion. Despite the setback, the Uganda Cubs refused to give up and continued to fight with determination and belief.

As the clock ticked down and Uganda faced the painful prospect of elimination, the Cubs once again demonstrated incredible mental strength and fighting spirit. Deep into stoppage time, Uganda earned a crucial penalty, and forward Arafat Ibanda stepped forward with immense confidence and composure. Ibanda calmly converted the penalty to level the score at 2-2, sending the Ugandan bench and supporters into wild celebrations. It was yet another heroic moment from the talented youngster, who had also delivered under pressure in Uganda’s earlier encounter against Ivory Coast. His late equaliser ensured the match would be decided through a dramatic penalty shootout.

The penalty shootout proved to be a nerve-wracking affair as both teams displayed remarkable composure from the spot. One by one, the players converted their penalties in front of a tense crowd, with neither side willing to surrender the precious World Cup ticket. Uganda goalkeeper Ashraf Lukyamuzi, who had earlier endured a difficult moment in the match, redeemed himself in spectacular fashion by saving Ghana’s eighth penalty. His crucial save handed Uganda the advantage before Trevor Mubiru confidently stepped forward and calmly converted the decisive penalty to seal an unforgettable 8-7 shootout victory for the Cubs.

The historic qualification marks only the second time Uganda will participate in the FIFA U17 World Cup, having made their debut appearance last year in Qatar. The achievement reflects the steady progress of youth football in Uganda and serves as a proud moment for the nation’s football fraternity. Coaches, fans, and sports leaders have praised the young players for their discipline, determination, and ability to perform under immense pressure against some of Africa’s strongest footballing nations.

In the other FIFA U17 World Cup qualification playoff, Mozambique also secured their place at the global tournament after defeating Ethiopia 5-4 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw in normal time. Their qualification further highlighted the competitiveness and growing quality of African youth football on the international stage.

Meanwhile, Africa will be represented by ten countries at this year’s FIFA U17 Men’s World Cup, namely Morocco, Cameroon, Senegal, Mali, Tanzania, Algeria, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Uganda, and Mozambique. As Uganda prepares for the prestigious global tournament, hopes are high that the Cubs will continue their impressive performances and proudly represent the nation on the world stage. Their remarkable journey to qualification has already inspired countless young footballers across Uganda and strengthened belief in the future of the country’s football development.
