In a highly anticipated showdown at Kampala Quality Grounds Kisaasi, Asubo Ladies FC demonstrated resilience, denying defending champions Kampala Queens a chance to leapfrog the table leaders, Kawempe Muslim LFC. The fixture, initially scheduled for January 17th, faced an unexplained postponement by the FUFA Competitions department, only to finally take place on Saturday, January 21st.

Under the strategic guidance of tactician Ssekamatte Leo, Asubo Ladies FC executed a flawless game plan, stifling the midfield prowess of Kampala Queens. The trio of Zaina Namboozo, Sarah Nakuya, and Sarah Babirye showcased remarkable work ethic, thwarting the visitors’ midfield trio of Damalie Matama, Shakirah Mutibwa, and Hasifa Nassuna.

Both teams struggled to create significant goal-scoring opportunities, with Asubo Ladies’ Kamiyat Naigaga delivering a threatening shot in the 42nd minute, brilliantly saved by Kampala Queens’ Daisy Nakaziro.

The defending champions had their moment in the 64th minute, as Catherine Nagadya’s powerful shot struck the goalpost, leaving the scoreline untouched.

In a post-match interview, Kampala Queens’ Tactician, Charles Ayiekoh, attributed the challenging conditions to the weather and the pitch’s size and bumpiness. Despite expressing disappointment, Ayiekoh acknowledged the silver lining of securing a point and avoiding conceding a goal.

On the other hand Ssekamatte Leo, Asubo Ladies’ tactician, emphasized the significance of adhering to the game plan. He praised his players for interpreting the strategy effectively, asserting that the hard-earned point would be a building block for future success in a competitive league.

With this draw, Asubo Ladies FC climbed to the 7th position on the league table, accumulating nine points—five more than their first-round total from the previous season. The team’s performance has seen a notable upturn, securing two victories, three draws, and suffering just one defeat in their last six matches.

Kampala Queens maintained their second-place standing with 20 points, trailing behind table leaders Kawempe Muslim by a single point. Charles Ayiekoh’s side, however, faced a setback in this first round, dropping seven points compared to their flawless performance in the previous season.

As the league takes a brief hiatus, slated to resume on February 10, 2024, football enthusiasts eagerly await the unfolding drama and competition that the second round promises to bring.
