The Crested Cranes of Uganda have been drawn against hosts Morroco , Burkina Faso , and Senegal for the 2022 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON).

In the draw ceremony which was held in Rabat on Friday evening, the Crested Cranes returning to the AWCON for the first time since making their debut appearance in 2000 in South Africa were placed in group A for the biennial football continental showpiece.

The 14th edition of the AWCON is scheduled to take place from July 2 to 23, 2022 and this the first edition, CAF is organizing this tournament with 12 teams moving from those usual eight.

The twelve teams were drawn in three groups of four teams each and in other groups, Banyana Banyana of South Africa were drawn in the same group with, Burundi, Botswana and defending champions, the super falcons of Nigeria who beat them in the last Awcon final while group B has Cameron, Tunisia and Togo.

For starters, the four semi-finalists at the tournament will automatically qualify for the 2023 Women’s World Cup while two other sides will enter a 10-team intercontinental play-off which will decide the final three spots at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

GROUP A: Morocco, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Uganda

GROUP B: Cameroon, Zambia, Tunisia, Togo

GROUP C: Nigeria, South Africa, Burundi, Botswana

The opening match of the TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2022 will see hosts Morocco face Burkina Faso on 2 July at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex in Rabat.
