Africa Aquatics Zone III Championships action – Day one | Jackson Kayira‘s Image

Uganda strengthened its bid for a fourth consecutive Africa Aquatics Zone III Championships title on Friday, October 23, winning three of the four 400-metre freestyle relays as the hosts continued to collect medals across the programme. However, strong performances from Kenya and Tanzania ensured the competition remained fiercely contested, with several races decided by fractions of a second.

The third day featured impressive displays across individual and relay events, with Uganda demonstrating its depth in multiple age groups. Kenya’s narrow victory in the boys’ 15-and-over 400-metre freestyle relay was among the day’s biggest talking points, while Tanzania continued to challenge the hosts with important victories in freestyle and butterfly races.

Uganda began the championships with 43 medals on day one, comprising 23 gold, 13 silver and seven bronze, including medals from the Masters events. The hosts raised the standard on Thursday, winning 22 individual titles and all eight relay races to establish an early advantage in the contest for overall honours.

Friday brought a more competitive test, with Uganda winning three relays while Kenya claimed the remaining title. Tanzania also secured several individual victories, demonstrating that Uganda would need to maintain its consistency to extend its reign at the regional championships.

The girls’ under-14 400-metre freestyle relay provided one of Uganda’s early highlights, as Gabriella Eleanor Ndyanabo, Mackayla Ssali, Shivon Nagginda and Gabriella Opolot Asima combined to win in 4:14.54. Their performance underlined the hosts’ strength in the younger age groups and added another relay gold to Uganda’s growing collection.

Uganda’s boys’ under-14 relay quartet of Kristian Mugumya Bwisho, Sanford William, Manuel Ssemanda and Elijah Ayesiga also secured gold, clocking 3:49.18 to finish ahead of Kenya’s 3:49.75. The result reinforced Uganda’s competitiveness in the junior categories, although the close finish showed that Kenya remained firmly in contention.

The girls’ 15-and-over 400-metre freestyle relay delivered another victory for the hosts. Muzito Gloria, Namutebi Kirabo, Paloma Kirabo and Crystal Ssemanda combined to clock 4:06.77, securing gold and further demonstrating Uganda’s depth in the older age groups.

Kenya, however, denied Uganda a clean sweep of the relay events by winning the boys’ 15-and-over 400-metre freestyle relay in a thrilling finish. Andrew Ogola, Isaiah Gitonga, Baraka Nyakundi and Nathan Matimu touched home in 3:36.83, edging Uganda’s 3:36.86 by just 0.03 seconds. Tanzania completed the podium in 3:39.16.

The narrow margin highlighted the intensity of the regional contest, with Kenya’s victory demonstrating how quickly the balance can shift among the leading teams. Uganda’s three relay wins remained a significant achievement, but the hosts were reminded that maintaining their dominance would require continued precision and consistency.

The individual 400-metre freestyle events also produced notable results. Tanzania’s Max Missokia won the boys’ under-14 race in 4:32.42, finishing ahead of Kenya’s Lawrence Okumu in 4:37.69 and Uganda’s Manuel Ssemanda, who claimed bronze in 4:39.53.

Uganda responded in the girls’ under-14 category through Gabriella Eleanor Ndyanabo, who won in 4:49.19. Tanzania’s Nicolene Viljoen finished second in 4:55.82, while Uganda’s Shivon Nagginda took third in 5:00.91, giving the hosts two swimmers on the podium.

Missokia continued Tanzania’s impressive showing by winning the boys’ 13–14 100-metre freestyle in 57.07 seconds. He also finished second in the boys’ 13–14 200-metre individual medley in 2:21.29, missing the title by just 0.01 seconds as Kenya’s Harith Muses claimed victory.

Kenya added another important result through Baraka Nyakundi, who won the boys’ 15–16 100-metre freestyle in 54.41 seconds, ahead of Uganda’s Jonathan Kaweesa in 54.78 seconds. The result further illustrated Kenya’s ability to challenge Uganda in events where the hosts have traditionally been strong.

The 200-metre butterfly races provided further excitement, with Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania sharing honours across several age groups. Tanzania’s Nicolene Viljoen won the girls’ under-14 event in 2:41.49, finishing ahead of Kenya’s Katja Kimani in 2:43.88 and Uganda’s Mackayla Ssali in 2:44.20.

Uganda secured the girls’ 15–16 200-metre butterfly title through Tyrah Muganzi, who clocked 2:45.69, while Tanzania’s Zac Okumu won the boys’ 15–16 race in 2:28.87. Burundi also celebrated a senior victory as Tony Lilia Uwineza won the boys’ 17-and-over 200-metre butterfly in 2:23.99.

Uwineza’s victory came in a closely contested race, with Uganda’s Thembo Katende finishing second in 2:24.18 and Tanzania’s Mark Tibazarwa taking third in 2:24.40. The result highlighted the depth of competition in the senior category, where the leading swimmers finished within fractions of a second of one another.

Uganda also claimed the top two places in the girls’ 17-and-over 200-metre butterfly, with Brandy Nakimbugwe winning in 3:07.03 and Blessing Kaitesi finishing second in 3:22.78. The one-two finish provided another boost for the hosts as they continued to collect medals across the programme.

Kenya enjoyed further success in the butterfly and individual medley events. Don Ndirangu won the boys’ 13–14 50-metre butterfly in 25.95 seconds, while Katja Kimani claimed the girls’ under-12 200-metre individual medley in 2:40.42 and the 100-metre freestyle in 1:05.38. Victoria Okumu won the girls’ 17-and-over 200-metre individual medley, while Lawrence Okumu secured the boys’ under-14 200-metre butterfly title in 2:28.07.

The Masters events added another dimension to the day’s programme, with swimmers from Uganda, Kenya and Burundi claiming victories across several age categories. Uganda’s Kiwuka Resty won the women’s 25–29 50-metre butterfly in 41.39 seconds, while Mary Akello topped the 30–34 category in 42.35 seconds. Other Ugandan winners included Mugenyi N. Abisagi, Rachael Jane Ayikoru and Patricia Bageine Ejalu.

Kenya’s Julie Bageine won the women’s 55–59 Masters category, while Burundi’s Elsie Uwamahoro topped the 35–39 event. Uganda also recorded victories in the men’s Masters competition through Habib Yawe, Alex Kateeba, Donald Rukare, Peter Mugisha Simon, Charles Obwana and Peter Ssebanakitta. Kenya’s Jerry Collins and Philip Kipkazi also secured titles, reflecting the broad spread of success across the region.

Against this competitive backdrop, several Ugandan swimmers distinguished themselves with outstanding individual performances. Ibrahim Lule was among the day’s leading performers, completing a hat-trick of individual gold medals. He won the boys’ under-12 50-metre butterfly in 29.80 seconds, the 200-metre individual medley in 2:35.87 and the 100-metre freestyle in 1:04.62, demonstrating impressive versatility across three disciplines.

Mackayla Ssali also enjoyed a productive day, collecting two individual gold medals and a bronze. She won the girls’ 13–14 50-metre butterfly in 30.78 seconds, narrowly beating teammate Gabriella Opolot Asima, who clocked 30.84 seconds. Ssali followed that victory with gold in the 100-metre freestyle in 1:01.42 before finishing third in the 200-metre butterfly in 2:44.20.

Muzito Gloria delivered another impressive performance in the older age groups, winning the girls’ 17-and-over 50-metre butterfly in 28.27 seconds before claiming the 100-metre freestyle title in 54.65 seconds. She also helped Uganda win the girls’ 15-and-over 400-metre freestyle relay, making her one of the hosts’ most influential performers on day three.

Zara Marie Mbanga contributed two individual gold medals, winning the girls’ 15-and-over 400-metre freestyle in 4:51.54 and the girls’ 15–16 200-metre individual medley in 2:31.26. Her achievements strengthened Uganda’s tally and highlighted the hosts’ quality in both freestyle and medley events.

Jonathan Kaweesa also made a valuable contribution by winning the boys’ 15–16 200-metre individual medley in 2:17.88. He added silver in the 100-metre freestyle, finishing in 54.78 seconds behind Kenya’s Nyakundi, whose victory further demonstrated the strength of the regional competition.

Mathew Ryland Andrew completed Uganda’s list of standout performers by winning the boys’ 17-and-over 50-metre butterfly in 24.90 seconds. Uganda also secured a one-two finish in the boys’ under-12 50-metre butterfly, with Lule taking gold and Malachi Ssali claiming silver in 30.00 seconds.

After three days of competition, Uganda’s consistency remains central to its pursuit of another overall title. The hosts have continued to produce individual champions across multiple age groups while maintaining a strong presence in the relays. Nevertheless, Kenya and Tanzania have shown that the title race remains competitive, with both countries registering important victories and pushing Uganda in several closely contested events.

Uganda’s three relay victories on Friday reinforced the team’s depth, but Kenya’s narrow triumph in the boys’ 15-and-over event demonstrated the fine margins separating the leading teams. Tanzania’s success in freestyle and butterfly races further underlined the strength of the visiting swimmers.

As the championships continue in Kampala, Uganda will seek to build on its early momentum and move closer to a fourth consecutive Africa Aquatics Zone III Championships title. The performances of Lule, Ssali, Muzito Gloria, Mbanga, Kaweesa and Andrew provide encouragement for the hosts, but sustained performances across the remaining programme will be essential if Uganda is to finish the championships on top.
