NEC FC produced a commanding second-half display to overcome URA FC 4-1 at the MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo, on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, completing a remarkable turnaround after falling behind in the opening minutes of the StarTimes Uganda Premier League encounter.
URA made the brighter start and quickly put NEC under pressure, with Isma Mugulusi getting on the scoresheet inside the opening minutes to give the visitors an early advantage. NEC, however, responded with purpose and restored parity in the 14th minute through James Jarieko, setting the stage for a dramatic shift in momentum.
The hosts continued to grow into the contest and were rewarded late in the first half when Richard Basangwa put NEC ahead in the 42nd minute. Enrique Lubwama then struck two minutes later to extend NEC’s advantage to 3-1 before the interval, leaving URA with a difficult task heading into the second half.
NEC returned from the break determined to put the contest beyond URA’s reach, and Basangwa completed his brace in the 49th minute to make it 4-1. The goal effectively settled the contest and capped a superb individual performance from the NEC forward, who played a central role in his side’s emphatic victory.
Both sides made several changes as the game progressed. URA introduced Marvin Praise Wambuga, Norman Namanya and Eric Okutu at the start of the second half before Dissan Galiwango and Emanuel Oula were brought on in the 68th minute. NEC responded with Jacob Okao, Shamiru Kimwero and Dina Dinanga Makenga in the 57th minute, followed by Marvin Kavuma in the 73rd minute and Muhammed Kagawa Ssenoga in the 81st minute.
NEC started with Hannington Sebwalunyo in goal, supported by Warren Buule, Ibrahim Kiyemba, Musitafa Mujuzi, Daniel Shabene, Allan Mugalu, Gideon Odongo, Emmanuel Ajo, James Jarieko, Richard Basangwa and Enrique Lubwama. URA lined up with Crispas Kusiima, James Penz Begisa, Sharif Lubega, Arthur Kiggundu, Moses Waiswa Ndhondhi, John Innocent Kisolo, Isma Mugulusi, Godfrey Sekibengo, Mikidadi Ssenyonga, Nelson Senkatuka and Moses Aliro Okabo.
The victory lifts NEC to second place with 10 points from four matches, level on points with third-placed SC Villa but ahead on goal difference. Only BUL FC, who maintained their perfect start with a 2-1 victory over Blacks Power, remain above them with 12 points.
For URA, the defeat leaves the tax collectors 10th with three points from three matches, having now suffered two defeats in their opening three league outings.
Under head coach Badru Mukasa Kaddu, NEC have made a strong early statement in the campaign, combining attacking quality with the resilience to recover from an early setback. URA, coached by Jimmy Kintu, will now be looking to regroup quickly and rediscover the form that earned them three points earlier in the season.
