The picturesque shores of Lake Victoria are set to provide the backdrop for another major chapter in Uganda’s beach soccer calendar when Bunjako Beach in Buwama, Mawokota County, hosts the sixth edition of the Uganda Beach Soccer Super 4 Championship on September 20.

The one-day championship will bring together the four leading sides from the 2025/26 season in a high-stakes contest that promises competitive matches, entertainment and a fitting start to the new campaign. The road to the championship was mapped out on Monday, September 14, when the Uganda Beach Soccer Association (UBSA) conducted the official draws at FUFA Kadiba Stadium.

The outcome produced two attractive semi-final pairings, with league champions Kampala City Beach Soccer Club drawn against Mutoola Beach Soccer Club, while St. Lawrence University will face MUBS in an all-university encounter. The four teams will now turn their attention to Bunjako, where victory in the semi-finals will secure a place in the title-deciding contest.

Kampala City will approach their meeting with Mutoola carrying the confidence of a side that has already demonstrated its quality by winning the 2025/26 league title. However, the champions will have little room for complacency against a Mutoola side that will be eager to produce an upset and announce its intentions at the beginning of the new season.

With a place in the final at stake, both teams will have to combine discipline, attacking quality and composure on the sand. The second semi-final has its own compelling storyline, with St. Lawrence University and MUBS set to lock horns in what promises to be an entertaining university derby.

The two institutions have invested considerably in sporting development, and their meeting will provide another opportunity for university talent to shine on a national stage. Both sides will be looking beyond simply winning the semi-final, as reaching the final would put them within touching distance of beginning the season with silverware.

The Super 4 format guarantees a demanding day for the participating teams, with the two semi-finals and the championship final all scheduled to take place on September 20. That condensed programme places a premium on squad depth, fitness and recovery, while also giving spectators the chance to enjoy a full day of top-level beach soccer at one venue. For the four contenders, however, there will be little margin for error, as one poor performance could bring their championship ambitions to an early end.

UBSA Chairperson and FUFA Executive Committee member Deo Mutabazi, who graced the draw ceremony, has appealed to Ugandans to turn up in large numbers and give the championship the atmosphere it deserves. Mutabazi believes strong public support can play a significant role in raising the profile of the sport, celebrating the players and encouraging more people to embrace beach soccer as an important part of Uganda’s sporting landscape.

“I also call upon all Ugandans to come out in big numbers and witness the Uganda Beach Soccer Super Four. Let us fill the venue, celebrate our players and teams, and give Beach Soccer the support it deserves,”

Mutabazi said.

The importance of the championship extends beyond the battle for the Super 4 trophy. The tournament will serve as the curtain-raiser for the 2025/26 Uganda Beach Soccer season, giving clubs an early opportunity to assess their preparations before the league campaign gets underway. More importantly, the matches will offer national team players a valuable competitive platform as Uganda builds towards the AFCON Beach Soccer qualifiers against Burundi in mid-October.

With the new Uganda Beach Soccer League season scheduled to kick off on October 27, teams have a relatively short period in which to fine-tune their squads and competitive plans. The Super 4 therefore comes at an important point in the calendar, allowing coaches to test combinations, identify areas that require improvement and give their players meaningful competitive minutes before the league race begins in earnest.

Bunjako Beach is also looking forward to welcoming the championship back to its grounds. Bunjako Beach Director Joseph Collins Ssemmanda expressed his pleasure at renewing the partnership with UBSA and assured the participating teams and supporters that the venue is prepared to host the event. He described Bunjako as a safe sporting destination with the capacity to accommodate different sporting activities and provide a suitable environment for athletes.

“We have worked with UBSA before, and we are happy to host you again. Bunjako is a safe sporting destination for athletes, and we host different sports,”

Ssemmanda said.

The championship has further received a significant boost through the support of a number of partners who have come on board to help make the event successful. Yards256, Tumba Juice, Embroidery Plus, Avroom Ventures, Nze KB Marketing Agency, Bunjako Beach, Maama Maria Junior School–Nakirebe, LEGOBRIGHT Sports Agency, Bbosa Maria Garments, and FUFA TV & Radio are among the organisations supporting the championship.

Their contribution will help UBSA meet several important tournament requirements, including gold, silver and bronze medals for the leading teams, the championship trophy, team uniforms, player welfare and other essential event logistics. The involvement of the partners provides an important foundation for the successful staging of the championship while also demonstrating the value of collaboration between sporting bodies, businesses and other stakeholders in advancing beach soccer.

Embroidery Plus Chief Executive Officer Irene Nankabirwa said the company was proud to work alongside UBSA and contribute to initiatives aimed at strengthening the sport. She stressed that their involvement is intended to support the wider growth of beach soccer and help create an environment in which players, teams and the sport itself can continue to develop.

“We are here to work with the Uganda Beach Soccer Association and contribute to the promotion, growth and development of beach soccer in Uganda,”

Nankabirwa said.

There will also be plenty to keep spectators entertained away from the competitive matches, with popular vocalist Flash Love expected to take to the stage at Bunjako Beach. The artiste, widely known for the hit song “Balilako,” will provide entertainment during the championship, adding another dimension to what organisers hope will be a memorable sporting occasion for players, supporters and families.

Entry to the championship has been set at UGX 5,000 per person, making the event accessible to a wide range of supporters. Organisers are optimistic that the affordable entrance fee, coupled with the prospect of watching four of the country’s leading beach soccer teams and enjoying live entertainment, will attract a sizeable crowd to Bunjako and create an energetic atmosphere throughout the day.

Also present during the draws were UBSA Vice Chairperson Peter Seguya and Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) representative Regina Mukatwaliri, alongside other stakeholders associated with the organisation and promotion of the sport.

With the semi-final pairings confirmed, the focus now shifts from the draw room to the shores of Lake Victoria. Kampala City, Mutoola, St. Lawrence University and MUBS each have their own ambitions, but only two will progress to the final and one will ultimately walk away with the sixth Uganda Beach Soccer Super 4 title.

At Bunjako, the stage will be set for a day of competition, celebration and another important step in the continued development of beach soccer in Uganda.
