Ugandan forward Fauzia Najjemba will miss the remainder of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season after suffering a long-term injury that has brought an early end to her debut campaign with Boston Legacy FC.
The setback comes at a time when the 22-year-old was beginning to find her rhythm in one of the world’s most competitive women’s football leagues.Boston Legacy FC confirmed that Najjemba sustained a serious injury during a team training session on July 9, forcing the club to place her on the Season-Ending Injury List.
The forward is expected to undergo a carefully managed rehabilitation programme as she works towards making a full recovery and returning to competitive action.
“On July 9, Boston Legacy FC forward Fauzia Najjemba suffered a rupture of her right rectus femoris tendon during a team training session. Najjemba will be re-evaluated biweekly by Dr. Kelly McInnis of Massachusetts General Brigham during her rehabilitation. Najjemba will be placed on the Season-Ending Injury List and is expected to make a full recovery,”
the club confirmed.
The unfortunate development is a major setback for Najjemba, who had embarked on an exciting new chapter in her career after joining Boston Legacy FC from Russian club Dynamo Moscow at the beginning of the year. The Ugandan international signed a two-year deal with the American side, becoming one of the latest players from the country to secure an opportunity to compete at the highest level of women’s football.
Najjemba arrived in the United States with great expectations after impressive performances for both club and country. Her pace, attacking intelligence, technical ability and versatility made her a valuable addition to Boston Legacy FC as she looked to establish herself in the NWSL, a league widely regarded as one of the toughest women’s football competitions in the world.
However, her first season in American football has been interrupted by injuries, preventing her from enjoying the consistent run of games she had hoped for. The latest setback is her second major injury of the campaign after she previously suffered a hamstring injury in April, which kept her sidelined for about two months.
Following her recovery from the earlier injury, Najjemba returned to action and immediately reminded fans and teammates of the quality she brings to the team. She was introduced as a substitute during Boston Legacy FC’s 2-2 draw against Bay FC, where she played a key role in the move that produced her side’s equalising goal.
The Ugandan forward was gradually building momentum and hoping to play a bigger role as the season entered a crucial stage. However, while preparing for Boston Legacy FC’s league clash against Chicago Stars on July 11, she suffered the latest injury during training, just two days before the fixture, effectively ending her season.
Najjemba’s absence will be a significant loss for Boston Legacy FC, who had counted on her attacking contribution as they continued their NWSL campaign. Her ability to create opportunities, provide an attacking threat and influence matches made her one of the players expected to play an important role in the team’s ambitions.
The injury also comes as a disappointment for the Crested Cranes, where Najjemba has grown into one of Uganda’s most recognised football figures. Her leadership, determination and performances on the international stage have made her an important part of Uganda’s women’s national team setup.
Despite the setback, Najjemba’s move to Boston Legacy FC remains a landmark achievement for Ugandan women’s football. She became only the second Ugandan female footballer to sign for a club in the NWSL, following Shadia Nankya’s historic move to Washington Spirit before later transferring to French side Le Havre.
As she begins her recovery journey, Najjemba will now focus on regaining full fitness with the guidance of Boston Legacy FC’s medical team. Although her first NWSL season has ended earlier than expected, the Ugandan star will be determined to return stronger and continue inspiring the next generation of footballers from Uganda.
