Rezlife Saints punched their ticket to the National Basketball League semifinals after overcoming Sommet 69-61 in a gripping winner-takes-all Game Three of the quarterfinal series on Sunday at Lugogo Indoor Arena.

With the best-of-three contest level at one victory apiece, there was no margin for error for either side, and the decisive showdown lived up to its billing.

Displaying remarkable resilience under pressure, the Saints recovered from difficult moments to produce a dominant finish that ended Sommet’s season and kept their own title aspirations firmly alive.

The contest burst into life from the opening tip as both teams embraced the intensity expected of a playoff decider. Rezlife settled into the game quicker, combining disciplined defending with efficient offensive execution to gain an early foothold.

Their ability to limit Sommet’s scoring opportunities while capitalising at the other end enabled them to close the opening quarter with a deserved 19-15 advantage, although it was already evident that neither side would be willing to give an inch.

Sommet answered emphatically in the second period, raising their defensive intensity and finding greater fluency in attack. They steadily chipped away at Rezlife’s lead through patient ball movement and improved shot selection, eventually swinging the momentum in their favour.

By the halftime break, Sommet had overturned the deficit to edge ahead 36-35, leaving the contest delicately poised with everything to play for in the final two quarters.

Neither side managed to establish clear control after the restart as the game evolved into a thrilling battle of determination and execution. Every possession carried immense significance, with baskets traded almost blow for blow as momentum repeatedly shifted between the two teams.

The lead changed hands on numerous occasions in a fiercely contested third quarter before Rezlife found a slight edge late in the period, taking a narrow 51-49 advantage into the decisive final ten minutes. The defining moments of the contest arrived in the fourth quarter. Sommet looked to have seized command when Mathew Kisakye attacked the basket with authority for a driving lay-up that opened a five-point cushion, putting the pressure squarely on Rezlife.

Rather than allowing the game to slip away, the Saints responded with outstanding composure. Hon Kwany drilled a timely three-pointer to reignite the contest before Edrine Ekau confidently converted two pressure free throws to restore parity at 61-61, setting the stage for a dramatic finish.

From that point onward, Rezlife completely took over proceedings. Their defensive unit tightened considerably, denying Sommet any further points for the remainder of the encounter while forcing rushed decisions and frustrating every attacking possession.

At the offensive end, the Saints remained calm and clinical, converting crucial opportunities to finish the game on a decisive unanswered run. It was a display of maturity and composure worthy of a team with genuine championship ambitions as they sealed an impressive 69-61 victory.

Edrine Ekau once again emerged as Rezlife’s driving force, leading the scoring with 17 points while delivering some of the game’s most important plays during the closing stages. Michael Otieno produced another dependable performance with 13 points, while Chris Omanye chipped in with 10 as Rezlife benefited from valuable contributions throughout the roster. Their balanced offensive production ensured the burden did not fall on one individual, highlighting the team’s collective strength when it mattered most.

Sommet bowed out with plenty of credit despite the defeat, having matched Rezlife for long spells in an entertaining and fiercely competitive contest. Mathew Kisakye led all scorers with an outstanding 20-point display, consistently troubling the Saints with his attacking aggression. Dieu Thuok Kuol added 13 points, while Peter Cheng finished with 10, but their impressive individual performances were ultimately undone by Rezlife’s relentless finish and defensive discipline in the closing minutes.

The statistics further reflected the fine margins that separated the two sides. Rezlife controlled the rebounding battle 45-40, repeatedly giving themselves valuable second-chance opportunities while limiting Sommet’s effectiveness on the glass.

Equally costly for Sommet were their 20 turnovers, which handed the Saints crucial extra possessions and proved decisive as the game entered its defining moments.

Having safely navigated a fiercely contested quarterfinal series, Rezlife Saints now turn their attention to an even sterner examination against record champions City Oilers in the best-of-five semifinal series.

The other semifinal promises another blockbuster encounter as Namuwongo Blazers face UCU Canons, with four of the league’s strongest teams now set to battle for a coveted place in the National Basketball League Finals.
