South African football has been plunged into mourning following the death of Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams, who was pronounced dead on Saturday evening, just days after representing his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Adams, 25, featured prominently for South Africa national football team during the ongoing FIFA World Cup, jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States. The talented midfielder played in all three of South Africa’s group-stage matches, earning praise for his performances on football’s biggest stage.
South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, expressed his grief in an official statement.
“It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams. South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents, and our nation mourns alongside his family, his teammates, and the millions of supporters who watched him grow from a promising academy prospect into a full Bafana Bafana international,”
McKenzie said.
Police have opened an investigation after Adams’ body was discovered at a residence in Schotschekloof, a suburb in central Cape Town, on Saturday.Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of death. McKenzie appealed to the public to refrain from speculation and to respect the privacy of Adams’ family and Mamelodi Sundowns during this difficult period.
“The cause of Jayden’s passing has not yet been confirmed. We urge the public to exercise restraint and compassion and allow his family and club the space and privacy they need. Any official information will be communicated by the appropriate parties in due course,”
he added.
Adams began his professional career with Stellenbosch FC before completing a move to Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025. During his time with the Pretoria-based club, he helped the Brazilians secure the 2024/25 Premier Soccer League title and most recently lifted the CAF Champions League trophy.
Tributes have continued to pour in from across the football world, including from Gianni Infantino, who extended his heartfelt condolences to Adams’ family, teammates and the wider football community.
“It is so incredibly sad to hear that South Africa midfielder Jayden Adams has passed away just weeks after featuring in his nation’s historic FIFA World Cup campaign. My thoughts and condolences, as well as those of everyone at FIFA and the global football community, are with his family, friends and teammates. The Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns star will be sorely missed. May he rest in peace,”
Infantino said.
The untimely passing of Jayden Adams has sent shockwaves through South African football, bringing an abrupt end to the life of one of the country’s brightest young talents whose future appeared destined for even greater success. His contributions to both club and country will be remembered by teammates, supporters and the football fraternity for years to come.
