Excitement has reached its peak in Gulu City as the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) Ball Games II Championship officially gets underway, bringing together thousands of student-athletes, coaches, officials, and sports enthusiasts from across Uganda.
The prestigious championship is expected to showcase exceptional talent, promote sportsmanship, and strengthen unity among secondary schools while offering young athletes a platform to compete at the highest level of school sports.
Ahead of the official kick-off, a technical meeting was held on Wednesday evening at Sacred Heart Secondary School, the main host venue for the championship. The meeting brought together members of the National Organising Committee, the Local Organising Committee, Technical Commissioners, games teachers, the USSSA Secretariat, and other key stakeholders responsible for the successful organisation of the tournament.
The meeting was chaired by Hajji Twahil Kitezala, the First Vice President of USSSA and Chairperson of the National Organising Committee. In his remarks, he underscored the importance of effective time management, clear and consistent communication, timely submission of daily reports, and regular coordination meetings. He noted that these principles would be essential in ensuring a well-organised, fair, and successful championship throughout the competition period.
During the meeting, organisers also confirmed the official venues for all sporting disciplines that will be contested during the championship. It was further announced that the official draws for all competitions will be conducted on Thursday, 9th July 2026, at 8:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Secondary School. Additional information, including fixtures and kick-off times, will be communicated after the completion of the draws and the screening process.
According to the confirmed venue allocation, Rugby 7s will be played at Angelo Negro College, while Basketball 3×3, U17 Basketball 5×5, and Volleyball will all take place at Gulu Community Park. Athletics competitions will be hosted at Gulu University, while Cross Country will be staged at Sir Samuel Baker School, providing suitable facilities for the endurance event.
Indoor competitions have also been allocated well-prepared venues. Handball and Netball will be played at St. Joseph’s College Layibi, while Chess will be hosted in the Multi-purpose Hall at Sacred Heart Secondary School. Scrabble matches will take place in the school’s A-Level Library, and Ludo competitions will also be conducted within the Sacred Heart Secondary School premises.
Other disciplines will be spread across different venues in Gulu City. DanceSport will be hosted at Kaunda Grounds, Lacrosse at the School of Health Sciences, Futsal at Gulu Primary School, Woodball at the Faculty of Medicine, Gulu University, Cricket at the Cricket Oval of St. Joseph’s College Layibi, and Baseball and Softball at Gulu Public School.
Football, one of the championship’s biggest attractions, will be played at several venues. The CAF U14 Football tournament will take place at St. Joseph’s College Layibi Ground One, while the U17 Football competition will be hosted across Gombe Junior School, Daniel Comboni Vocational Institute, Barracks Grounds 1 and 2, Gulu Core Primary Teachers’ College, Gulu High School Grounds 1 and 2, Emmanuel Primary School, Ocer Grounds 1 and 2, Gulu Prisons Ground, and Gulu Demonstration Primary School to accommodate the large number of participating teams.
The championship will also feature exciting beach sports and demonstration games. Beach Volleyball and Beach Soccer will be played at the Sacred Heart Secondary School Grounds, while demonstration sports including Kabaddi, Kho-Kho, and Pickleball will be showcased at Kaunda Grounds. Golf, another demonstration sport, will be hosted at Sir Samuel Baker, reflecting USSSA’s commitment to promoting emerging sporting disciplines in Uganda.
As Gulu City welcomes the nation’s finest young athletes, the USSSA Ball Games II Championship promises days of thrilling competition, unforgettable performances, and lasting friendships. With meticulous planning by the organising committees and strong collaboration among all stakeholders, the championship is expected to celebrate not only sporting excellence but also discipline, teamwork, leadership, and national unity.
All eyes are now on Gulu as the city prepares to deliver a successful championship that will leave a lasting mark on Uganda’s school sports calendar.
