Uganda national women’s team goalkeeper Vanessa Edith Karungi has taken another significant step in her flourishing professional career after completing a two-year transfer to Danish women’s football powerhouse Brøndby IF.
The experienced Crested Cranes shot-stopper joins the club as a free agent following the expiration of her contract with fellow Danish side FC Nordsjælland, bringing an end to one chapter of her journey in Scandinavia while opening another with one of the country’s most successful clubs.
The move further highlights Karungi’s steady rise in European football and reinforces her status as one of Uganda’s finest female football exports.
Karungi’s arrival at Brøndby IF comes at an exciting time for the club, which enjoyed another impressive domestic campaign by finishing second in the Danish Women’s League last season, only behind eventual champions HB Køge. That strong finish earned Brøndby a place in the 2026/27 UEFA Women’s Champions League, giving the Ugandan goalkeeper an opportunity to compete against some of Europe’s best players and clubs.
The Danish outfit will begin its continental campaign in the second qualifying round next month, where it is set to face Dutch giants Ajax in what promises to be a highly competitive encounter.
The transfer represents another important milestone in Karungi’s remarkable football journey since leaving Uganda to pursue a professional career in Europe. Four years ago, she made the move to Denmark after signing for B93 Copenhagen from FUFA Women Super League side She Corporate FC.
She quickly adapted to the demands of European football through a series of composed and commanding performances, earning a move to FC Nordsjælland, where she continued to develop her game and establish herself as one of the league’s reliable goalkeepers.
Before embarking on her professional career abroad, Karungi had already earned recognition as one of Uganda’s most promising goalkeeping talents. She represented Olila High School during the 2017 school football competitions, where her exceptional reflexes, composure under pressure, and leadership qualities attracted widespread attention.
Those performances laid the foundation for her progression to She Corporate FC, where she continued to grow before eventually breaking into the Crested Cranes, Uganda’s senior women’s national team.
Karungi’s move to Brøndby IF is not only a personal milestone but also another positive moment for Ugandan women’s football. Her continued success in Europe reflects the growing quality of talent emerging from Uganda and serves as an inspiration to the next generation of female footballers aspiring to play professionally overseas.
As she begins this new chapter with Brøndby and prepares for the challenge of UEFA Women’s Champions League football, Ugandan fans will be hoping she continues to excel and further raise the country’s profile on the international stage.
