Express FC are closing in on the appointment of Morley Byekwaso as their new head coach, with the experienced tactician reportedly in advanced talks to take charge ahead of the 2026/27 Uganda Premier League season.
According to Kawowo Sports, Byekwaso has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Jimmy Kintu, who recently departed the Red Eagles to become the new head coach of URA FC. The development comes as Express continue their ambitious rebuilding process following a disappointing campaign.
The CAF A Licence holder has been out of management since the end of the 2024/25 season but now appears set for a return to the Uganda Premier League. His wealth of coaching experience and understanding of the local game have made him one of the most sought-after tacticians available during the off-season.
A move to Express would mark an emotional homecoming for Byekwaso, who previously featured for the club during his playing days. His familiarity with the Red Eagles’ traditions, culture and expectations is expected to be a key asset as the club seeks to restore its place among Uganda’s football heavyweights.
The potential appointment also signals the club’s determination to begin a new chapter under fresh leadership. Express are looking to assemble a strong technical team capable of challenging for honours once again after several seasons of inconsistency.
The coaching search forms part of a wider restructuring exercise currently underway at Wankulukuku. In a major administrative move, Express recently appointed renowned sports journalist Becky Cynthia Nakimera as the club’s new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), reinforcing its commitment to strengthening operations both on and off the pitch.
Further changes are also expected behind the scenes. Kawowo Sports reports that Hajji Adam Golooba Ntale is set to be named the club’s new team manager, replacing Wilfred Mudanya as Express continue reshaping their leadership structure ahead of the new campaign.
The Red Eagles endured a frustrating 2025/26 Uganda Premier League season, finishing 10th in the final standings, well below the standards expected of one of Uganda’s most decorated football clubs. That disappointing campaign has prompted the club to undertake significant changes in both its technical and playing departments.
Once a new head coach is officially appointed, Express are expected to accelerate their transfer business. Several players could leave the club, while fresh signings are anticipated as management looks to provide the incoming coach with a squad capable of competing at the highest level.
The 2026/27 Uganda Premier League season is scheduled to kick off on August 28, 2026, with the official fixture list expected later this month. If negotiations are successfully concluded, Morley Byekwaso could soon be unveiled as the man tasked with leading Express FC back into contention for silverware and restoring the club’s status as one of the country’s dominant forces.
