Uganda’s football fraternity is set to come together in a remarkable show of compassion and solidarity when the Mike Mutebi Charity Match takes centre stage at the MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo, on Thursday, 9th July 2026.

Organised by the Mustafa Kizza Foundation, the event is expected to attract some of the biggest names in East African football, with all proceeds dedicated to supporting the family of veteran coach Mike Hillary Mutebi as he continues his recovery from a prolonged illness.

The charity spectacle will be headlined by an exciting international exhibition match featuring Friends of Mustafa Kizza against a select side captained by renowned Kenyan football brothers McDonald Mariga Wanyama and Victor Mugubi Wanyama. The fixture marks the return leg of the two-legged charity series after Kizza’s side secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory in the first encounter played in Nairobi, setting the stage for another entertaining contest in Kampala.

Fans will also be treated to an entertaining curtain-raiser before the main event, as Salim Katumba & Friends lock horns with the popular Tik-Tok Team in what promises to be a lively and entertaining friendly match. The opening fixture will kick off at 4:00 p.m., providing an exciting build-up before attention shifts to the star-studded main attraction later in the evening.

Momentum for the charity event gathered on Friday, 3rd July 2026, when Mustafa Kizza addressed the media at the MTN Omondi Stadium. The Nairobi United defender was joined by former KCCA FC teammate Allan Okello, who currently plies his trade with Tanzanian champions Young Africans. Also present were current KCCA FC captain Filbert Obenchan and Kenneth “Moba” Mubiru, a brother to Coach Mike Hillary Mutebi, underscoring the unity and collective commitment of the football community towards the noble cause.

During the press conference, Kizza passionately appealed to football lovers, sports enthusiasts and the wider Ugandan public to turn up in large numbers and stand with one of the country’s most influential football minds. He described the charity match as an opportunity for the football family to give back to a coach who has dedicated decades to developing players and transforming Ugandan football, both at club level and with the Uganda national team.

“Mustafa Kizza Foundation is excited to be hosting a charity match between Mustafa Kizza and friends against the Wanyama’s as we honor our coach Mike Mutebi. He (Coach Mike Mutebi) was a father to us and groomed us.

I am humbled by KCCA Football Club for the support given to us thus far. Our other friends from the media, Salim Katumba and friends and the Tik Tokers are also appreciated. We call upon the masses to come in big numbers.

Allan Okello echoed Kizza’s sentiments, paying glowing tribute to Mutebi for the pivotal role he has played throughout his career. The gifted midfielder described the veteran tactician as more than just a coach, referring to him as a mentor, guardian and inspirational leader whose guidance helped shape his journey into professional football. Okello urged supporters to fill Lugogo in appreciation of a man who has positively impacted countless players across generations.

“Coach Mike Mutebi to me was a mentor. He was my guardian and guided me in many decisions. He remains dear to me. When I heard of his news that he was ill, I said to myself that I needed to do something special. The charity match is part of the many things

Okello remarked.

The event will also reunite Ugandan fans with one of Africa’s most decorated footballers, McDonald Mariga Wanyama, whose illustrious career saw him represent some of Europe’s most prestigious clubs, including Helsingborgs IF, Parma, Real Sociedad and Italian giants Inter Milan, where he made history as the first Kenyan to win the UEFA Champions League.

His younger brother, Victor Mugubi Wanyama, also boasts an outstanding career, having featured for Helsingborgs IF, Celtic, Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur, CF Montréal and Dunfermline Athletic, bringing additional star power to the charity occasion.

Organisers have kept ticket prices affordable to encourage widespread attendance, with ordinary tickets going for UGX 5,000 while VIP access is priced at UGX 10,000.

Beyond the football entertainment, the day represents an opportunity for supporters to honour one of Uganda’s finest coaches and demonstrate that the football community stands strongest when united behind one of its own.
