Spain marched into the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026™ with authority and elegance after a commanding 3-0 victory over Austria in Los Angeles, a performance defined by Mikel Oyarzabal’s sharp finishing and Pedro Porro’s historic first international goal. From the outset, Spain set an intense rhythm that Austria struggled to contain.

Lamine Yamal wasted no time in announcing Spain’s intent, testing the defence inside the opening minute with a lively early effort that underlined the European champions’ confidence. Spain’s pressure continued to build wave after wave, and although Marc Cucurella briefly believed he had opened the scoring from a corner, the celebration was cut short after the referee ruled out the effort for a foul on goalkeeper Alexander Schlager.

The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 36th minute, and it was a move that reflected Spain’s fluid attacking identity. Cucurella delivered a low, precise cross from the left, and Oyarzabal showed perfect anticipation, meeting the ball with a clean first-time finish that nestled into the corner.

Spain almost doubled their advantage before the interval when Alex Baena’s free-kick crashed against the crossbar, while Yamal continued to trouble Austria with another dangerous effort that forced a strong save.

Austria, meanwhile, were forced into a frustrating rhythm, often chasing the game without finding real control. Michael Gregoritsch came closest to breaking through but failed to make contact with a well-placed Marcel Sabitzer cross, while substitute Sasa Kalajdzic later arrived in a promising position only to send his header over the bar. Spain’s control in midfield ensured Austria were largely restricted to isolated moments rather than sustained pressure.

Spain’s dominance deepened in the 69th minute when Pedro Porro rose brilliantly to head home from another inviting Cucurella delivery, marking a memorable milestone with his first goal for his country. Even as Austria searched for a response, David Alaba’s goal-line clearance to deny Lamine Yamal highlighted Spain’s relentless attacking threat.

The pressure eventually told again late on, as Oyarzabal completed his brace by sliding in to convert another precise cross, putting the result beyond any doubt.

Behind the attacking brilliance, Unai Simón continued his extraordinary run of form, delivering yet another clean sheet to extend Spain’s defensive streak to five consecutive World Cup matches and 519 minutes without conceding, surpassing a long-standing record.

With momentum firmly on their side, Spain now turn their focus to a high-stakes Round of 16 clash against Portugal in Dallas on 6 July, after the Portuguese edged Croatia 2-1 in a tense encounter where VAR played a decisive and influential role in shaping the outcome.
