The Black Pirates produced a performance of grit, resilience, and championship mentality to successfully defend their Uganda Rugby Premiership title, edging Buffaloes RFC 30-29 in a nail-biting final played at Kings Park Arena on Saturday.

In a contest decided by fine margins, the Pirates held their nerve in the closing stages to secure a historic back-to-back league triumph. The defending champions made an explosive start to the final, immediately stamping their authority on the contest when Nathan Bwambale crossed the whitewash in just the third minute.

The early try set the tone for a high-intensity encounter, with the Pirates showing intent and physical dominance from the outset, forcing Buffaloes onto the back foot in the opening exchanges.

Buffaloes, however, responded with composure through their eventual man of the match, Yasin Waiswa, who calmly slotted in three points to open his account in what would become a remarkable 19-point individual contribution. His accuracy off the boot kept Buffaloes within reach, but despite his efforts, the Pirates’ attacking rhythm and forward power continued to tilt the balance of the game.

The Pirates’ forwards proved decisive in the first half, with Bwambale adding to his early try alongside powerful finishes from Frank Kidega and Alex Aturinda, both of whom scored from more than ten meters out. These tries highlighted Buffaloes’ defensive frailties, as gaps in their line were repeatedly exposed.

Struggling to generate sustained attacking momentum of their own, Buffaloes were forced into early tactical changes by the 20th minute in a bid to regain control of the contest. The introduction of substitutes Douglas Musoke and Leonard Ndiku injected much-needed energy into Buffaloes’ play, with their direct carries shifting momentum. Ndiku’s try reduced the deficit to 25-13 before halftime, offering Buffaloes a lifeline and setting up a tense second-half battle as they sought a dramatic comeback.

After the break, Buffaloes continued to fight back with renewed belief, as Titus Oyoo crossed for a crucial try that kept the pressure on the champions. However, any hopes of a full turnaround were checked when Eric Mula produced a brilliant solo effort to extend the Pirates’ advantage. That score would prove the decisive moment, as it remained the Pirates’ only points of a tightly contested second half in which Buffaloes managed to register 16 points but fell just short of completing the comeback.

Since lifting their maiden league title in 2018, the Black Pirates have steadily established themselves as one of Uganda’s rugby powerhouses, consistently competing across the Uganda Rugby Premiership, Uganda Cup, and National 7s Series. Their latest triumph further cements their status as a dominant force in the domestic game. For the first time in their history, the Pirates have successfully defended their league crown, having previously failed to retain it in 2018 and 2023.

This milestone brings them closer to the enduring legacy of traditional giants Heathens and KOBs, who have not only defended titles but have also achieved multiple consecutive championship runs in the league’s history.

With that ambition in sight, the Pirates now face the challenge of maintaining consistency across all formats. After a below-par National 7s campaign in 2025, they responded strongly by clinching the Uganda Cup to close the rugby calendar year on a high. The focus now shifts toward improving their sevens performance, defending their Uganda Cup crown, and chasing further league dominance as they aim to build a lasting era of success.
