Uganda’s defensive stalwart, Shadia Nankya, has reached a defining milestone in her flourishing career after completing a historic move to French Première Ligue side Le Havre AC on a contract running until June 30, 2027. Officially unveiled by the French club and entrusted with the number 5 shirt, Nankya now steps into one of Europe’s most competitive and technically refined women’s leagues. Her transfer is not merely a personal achievement, it represents a breakthrough moment for Ugandan women’s football, as she becomes the first Ugandan woman to compete in the French topflight, further expanding the international presence of the Crested Cranes.

Nankya arrives in France following her professional stint in the United States with Washington Spirit, a respected side in the National Women’s Soccer League. During her time there, she also gained valuable competitive experience on loan at Dallas Trinity in the USL Super League. These opportunities exposed her to high-intensity football, elite conditioning standards, and advanced tactical systems, strengthening her defensive discipline and composure under pressure. The move to France therefore marks a natural progression for a player who has consistently demonstrated adaptability, resilience, and growth across different footballing cultures.

At 24 years of age, having been born on 25th November 2001, Nankya could be handed an immediate high-profile test against eight-time European champions Olympique Lyonnais Féminin on Tuesday, 10th March. Such a fixture would present an extraordinary platform for her to showcase her strength, aerial dominance, and tactical intelligence against some of the finest attackers in women’s football. Currently sitting eighth on the Première Ligue table with 16 points from 16 matches, Le Havre AC will look to Nankya’s defensive solidity to help steady their campaign and push them further up the standings.

Nankya’s journey began in 2016 at Uganda Martyrs Lubaga Women Football Club, where she emerged as a teenage sensation with exceptional maturity and leadership qualities. Even at a young age, she commanded the defensive line with authority, reading the game with impressive intelligence and confidence. Her physical presence, standing at 1.75 metres, combined with her calm ball distribution, quickly distinguished her as one of the brightest defensive prospects in Ugandan women’s football.

In a remarkable display of versatility, she concluded her time at Uganda Martyrs Lubaga by finishing as the top scorer of the FUFA Women’s Cup with nine goals, despite primarily operating as a centre-back. This rare accomplishment highlighted her aerial prowess and ability to contribute decisively during attacking set pieces. Her consistent excellence soon earned her a move to UCU Lady Cardinals in 2019, where she continued to develop into a dependable and commanding defensive leader.

Her steady club performances inevitably earned her a place in the senior national team, the Crested Cranes, in 2018. Representing Uganda at both the CECAFA and COSAFA Championships, Nankya played a crucial role as the team secured bronze medals in both tournaments. These early international experiences strengthened her confidence and sharpened her competitive edge, laying a firm foundation for her continued rise on the continental stage.

Nankya’s career reached new heights during her time with Egyptian side FC Masar, where she competed in the CAF Women’s Champions League. Notably, she helped guide the club to a historic third-place finish on their debut appearance in the competition. Her commanding defensive displays earned her a place in the Team of the Tournament, placing her among Africa’s elite performers. She achieved this recognition alongside fellow Ugandan international Aisha Nantongo, underlining the growing impact and recognition of Ugandan talent in continental women’s football.

Like many elite athletes, Nankya’s journey has not been without challenges. In 2021, she suffered a persistent knee injury that sidelined her during Uganda’s participation in the 2022 CECAFA Women’s Championship and the 2022 Africa Women Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The setback required patience, discipline, and immense mental strength. However, her determined rehabilitation and strong return to competitive football exemplified her resilience and unwavering commitment to excellence.

While several Ugandan female footballers have pursued opportunities in the United States at college level, Nankya distinguished herself by becoming the first Ugandan woman to feature in the top-tier National Women’s Soccer League before securing her historic move to France. Her journey from Lubaga to Egypt, the United States, and now Europe reflects steady ambition, growth, and fearless determination.

At just 24 years old, Shadia Nankya stands as a symbol of possibility and progress for Ugandan women’s football. Her story is one of discipline, courage, and relentless pursuit of excellence. As she begins this new chapter in France, she carries with her the pride of a nation and the hopes of countless young girls who now see in her journey proof that the global stage is within reach.
