Mukono, Uganda – The 2025 Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS) Games netball quarter-finals at Uganda Christian University (UCU), Mukono, delivered an electric start to the knockout stages on Monday morning, with drama, upsets, and commanding performances all on display. Makerere University produced the tournament’s shock result, eliminating defending champions Victoria University 33–26 in a match that had fans on the edge of their seats.
Victoria University, led by coach Rashid Mubiru, looked determined from the first whistle. They edged the opening quarter 8–7, displaying sharp passing and clinical shooting that suggested the holders were ready to defend their crown with authority. Early momentum seemed to favor Victoria, who capitalized on their experience to apply pressure on Makerere’s defence.
However, Makerere University responded with growing confidence. The second quarter saw them turn the game on its head, outscoring Victoria 16–14 to overturn the deficit. Their attackers displayed composure under pressure, while the mid-court players provided precision passes that steadily dismantled the defending champions’ early dominance.
The decisive moment came in the third quarter, when Victoria faltered. Scoring only five goals against Makerere’s seven, the holders struggled to maintain the rhythm that had given them early confidence. The four-goal gap that emerged at 23–19 swung momentum firmly in Makerere’s favor, signaling a shift that would prove impossible for Victoria to overcome.
In the final quarter, Makerere maintained their composure. They outscored Victoria 10–8, demonstrating tactical discipline and a calm finishing touch. When the final whistle blew, the scoreboard read 33–26, confirming one of the most stunning results of the championship and cementing Makerere’s place in the semifinals.
Hosts Uganda Christian University also made a statement with their quarter-final performance. Facing newcomers St Lawrence University, the 2023 runners-up dominated proceedings, winning 31–16. From the opening whistle, UCU showcased their experience and cohesion, never allowing their opponents a chance to mount a serious challenge. Their performance underlined their readiness to contest for the AUUS crown once again.
Kampala University was equally impressive in their 36–23 triumph over Bugema University. KU imposed themselves in every quarter, opening with an 11–5 first period before steadily extending their lead. Their attacking precision and defensive resilience highlighted a well-drilled squad ready to compete at the highest level in the semifinals.
Nkumba University completed the semifinal lineup with a commanding 34–21 victory over Makerere University Business School. Dominant throughout, Nkumba claimed every quarter (9–4, 18–9, 26–15, 34–21) to advance comfortably. Their clinical shooting and organized defense provided the perfect blueprint for success, making them a team to watch in the next stage of the competition.
The AUUS netball semifinals promise more thrilling encounters. Kampala University will face hosts UCU, while Nkumba University will take on the giant killers, Makerere University. Each team enters the semifinals with momentum and determination, setting the stage for an exciting battle for a place in the championship decider.
