In a decisive move to uphold discipline and integrity in Uganda’s school sports, the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) has banned two prominent secondary schools—Royal Giants High School and St. Andrews High School Gombe—and six of their key officials from future tournaments. This ruling follows significant rule violations during the highly anticipated USSSA Ball Games II and Mind Games, held at Teso College Aloet, Soroti City, from September 1st to 6th, 2024.

The controversy erupted when both schools refused to honor their scheduled matches. This defiant action not only led to their immediate dismissal from the competition but also resulted in a two-year ban from all future USSSA football tournaments. The severity of these sanctions demonstrates the association’s firm stance against violations of match schedules and fair play.

Royal Giants High School was specifically penalized for refusing to play against St. Andrews High School Gombe, a blatant disregard for USSSA’s competition rules. This resulted in their disqualification, along with a suspension from future tournaments. Additionally, three officials from the school—Head Coach Mulindwa Frank, Assistant Coach Mutebi Tonny, and Goalkeeping Coach Jjuko Godfrey—have also been banned.

Similarly, St. Andrews High School Gombe faced sanctions for declining to play St. Mary’s Boarding Secondary School Kitende. Alongside their dismissal from the tournament, a two-year suspension was imposed. The school’s coaching team—Head Coach Kireewa Maato, Assistant Coach Mwanje Gerald, and Goalkeeping Coach Masembe Adam—were also banned.

The USSSA cited clear violations of Article 13 of its competition rules, which prohibits teams from failing to honor match schedules. The disciplinary committee noted that the actions of both schools undermined the core values of sportsmanship and competition ethics. To compound the issue, the association referred to FIFA’s regulations on match-fixing, highlighting the gravity of the offenses.

The bans extend beyond the tournament arena, with the USSSA advising the affected schools to exclude the banned officials from any further sports-related activities within their institutions for the duration of the ban. Non-compliance could lead to more severe penalties.

This disciplinary action has sent ripples throughout Uganda’s school sports landscape, prompting many school administrators to review their internal procedures to ensure compliance with USSSA regulations. While both schools have yet to issue formal statements, rumors suggest they may appeal the sanctions. However, given the substantial evidence and the seriousness of the offenses, any appeal may face significant challenges.

The incident marks one of the most severe actions taken by USSSA in recent years, serving as a stark warning to all participating schools: failure to adhere to the rules will have lasting consequences. As the USSSA continues its mission to promote fairness and talent development in school sports, this decision reinforces that integrity must always come first.

The absence of Royal Giants High School and St. Andrews High School Gombe will undoubtedly be felt in future tournaments, where both schools have been strong competitors. However, the USSSA’s commitment to clean competition remains resolute, ensuring that school sports in Uganda retain their values of discipline and fairness.

This action serves as a turning point for school sports in Uganda, reminding all involved that the rules governing competitions must be respected, and those who break them will face serious repercussions.
