By Brian Sentuuya || Maroons FC have made headlines by signing the highly promising attacking midfielder Ivan Asaba, popularly known as ‘Di Maria,’ on a two-year contract, with an option to renew. The Luzira-based side confirmed Asaba as their latest acquisition ahead of the 2024/25 season, marking their second signing of the transfer window.

Ivan Asaba, whose journey through Ugandan football has been marked by notable achievements and potential, has been out of the limelight since departing from Vipers SC at the beginning of the last season. His time as a free agent has now come to an end, as he joins the ranks of the Prison Warders with hopes of rejuvenating his career. Asaba’s break from professional football has left fans and analysts eager to see how he will perform upon his return.

Asaba’s football journey is one of dedication and continuous improvement. He honed his skills at Kibuli SS and St. Mary’s Kitende, two institutions renowned for their contributions to Ugandan football. His talent was evident early on, leading him to feature prominently for the KCCA Soccer Academy and the Vipers Junior Team in the FUFA Junior League. These formative years were crucial in developing his technical abilities and understanding of the game.

The 21-year-old has previously played for Vipers SC from 2020 to 2023, where he won the Uganda Premier League (UPL), having joined from KCCA FC in 2020. Internationally, Asaba has represented Uganda with distinction. He was part of the Uganda Hippos team that won the maiden CECAFA U-20 title in 2020 and reached the finals of the 2021 African U-20 Cup of Nations in Mauritania. Additionally, he featured for the Uganda U-17 national team, showcasing his talent on the continental stage at various age levels.

The addition of Ivan Asaba to Maroons FC is seen as a strategic move to bolster their midfield options. Known for his creativity and ability to dictate the pace of the game, Asaba is expected to play a pivotal role in the club’s ambitions for the upcoming seasons. His vision and technical skills will be crucial in creating scoring opportunities and linking up play. Fans are hopeful that his presence will bring a new dynamic to the team’s midfield.

Asaba’s signing follows the arrival of defender Apollo Kagogwe from Wakiso Giants. The club’s proactive approach in the transfer market reflects their determination to build a competitive squad capable of achieving significant milestones. By securing key players in both defense and midfield, Maroons FC is laying the groundwork for a balanced and formidable team.

As he dons the club’s colors, fans and teammates alike look forward to witnessing his contributions on the pitch. With his background and potential, Asaba is poised to become a key figure in Maroons FC’s quest for success.

Meanwhile, four players have already left the club, including captain David Ndihabwe and top scorer Fred Amaku, both of whom joined Kitara. Goalkeeper Hannington Ssebwalunyo and defender Patrick Bayiga have also left for NEC, with Jacob Okao rumored to be on his way out.
