Champions of CECAFA Region, Uganda Cubs will play hosts Morocco in the opening match of the 2021 Total AFCON U17 championship scheduled to take place next month from 13th to 31st March 2021, in Rabat.

This was revealed after the official draw for the Total U-17 Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco 2021 was conducted on Wednesday, 24 February 2021 in Nouakchott, Mauritania by CAF Director of Competitions Samson Adamu assisted by Mauritania’s legend Mustapha Fall.

The official draw handed the CECAFA Champions a place in Group A of the 2021 AFCON U-17 championship alongside hosts Morocco, Zambia (COSAFA Champions) and 2013 Champions Ivory Coast who will be making their sixth appearance at the tournament.

However, despite the outcome of the official draw, Uganda Cubs Coach Hamza Lutalo is optimistic that boys will be able to put up good performance against the aforementioned teams.

“We are ready to face the teams that are in our group. As the technical team, we are preparing the boys to face any kind of opposition because our target is to advance past the group stage.”

This will be the second consecutive time for the Cubs who were crowned Champions of CECAFA Region after defeating Tanzania 3-1 in the Final played in Rubavu, Rwanda last December to compete in the AFCON Finals.

The first time ever to play in AFCON was in 2019 in Tanzania under Ghanaian tactician Paa Samuel Kwesi Fabin and the Cubs were in group A alongside hosts Tanzania, Angola and Nigeria.

On 14th April 2019, the Cubs played their first group game against Angola at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam and lost 1-0.

Three days later, Cubs managed to bounce back with a 3-0 victory over hosts Tanzania thanks to Andrew Kawooya, Yiga Najib, and Man of the match Ivan Asaba strikes.

In their last group game against Nigeria, the Cubs started on a high note and took the lead John Kokas Alou but the Nigerians levelled the game only to end 1-1 and the Cubs finished third with 4 points thus halting their U17 FIFA World Cup dreams in Brazil as Angola and Nigeria progressed from the group.
