It’s close to a year since the ongoing global Coronavirus pandemic disrupted major sporting events across the globe, Uganda inclusive.
The situation forced the Football governing body in Uganda, FUFA to suspend all football related activities months after the government said major sporting events would be banned until further notice to mitigate the spread of the deadly coronavirus pandemic.
First and foremost, it was reaffirmed that the overriding priority is to aid the health and well being of the nation and our communities, including players, coaches, managers, club staff and all soccer lovers in the pearl of Africa.
And it was upon that background therefore that FUFA declared Fufa women Elite League and the inaugural edition of the FUFA Women Super League null and void since only one of the three rounds had been played before the deadly pandemic took charge.
The Federation also suspended the Startimes Uganda Premier League (1st Division) plus the Startimes Fufa Big league (2nd Division) and given the circumstances by then, football rightly took a back seat but as the lockdown measures were slowly eased by the authorities, plans for resumption were put into effect.
The Startimes Uganda Premier League returned late last year, despite concerns of players testing positive for the disease but for the meantime, FUFA 2nd Division League (StarTimes FUFA Big League), FUFA Women Super League, FUFA Women Elite League, the Stanbic Uganda Cup and The FUFA Drum had to wait for the ‘right’ time.
Meanwhile, after a long wait,clubs, players, coaches and stakeholders in the aforementioned competitions are also gearing up for a return after the FUFA Executive has authorised the kickoff of the above stated football competitions.
The Federation has confirmed the development in circular No. 1128 dated, FUFA/C/01/21 and signed off by the FUFA Deputy CEO- Football Kiiza Decolas Hantali.
In compliance with the Government of Uganda directives and guidelines on COVID-19 pandemic, the CAF & FIFA COVID-19 protocols, and the FUFA COVID-19 Regulations, FUFA will issue comprehensive guidelines to be adhered to by the respective competitions entities to safeguard the health of all the stakeholders involved.
The FUFA Competitions Directorate and the FUFA Drum Committee will soon release the schedule of events and formats to be followed during the respective Competitions.
FUFA wishes to call upon all stakeholders to understand the sporting spirit behind the delayed kick-off of these competitions and appreciate any format changes that may be suggested in this regard.
Meanwhile the FUFA Executive will guide on other competitions as the Covid 19 situation improves.
