Kitara FC booked their place in the next round of the CAF Confederation Cup with an impressive 2-0 victory over Mogadishu City Club at Hoima City Stadium on Saturday, completing a convincing 4-1 aggregate triumph. The Royals, who had carried a 2-1 advantage from the first leg, produced a mature and controlled performance on home soil, combining attacking purpose with defensive discipline to ensure that their continental campaign remained firmly on course.
Jimmy Kalema and Frank Tuwesigye ‘Zaga’ were the heroes for Kitara, scoring in either half to settle the return leg and underline the Ugandan side’s superiority across the two encounters. Having already established a narrow advantage in the opening meeting, Kitara showed little sign of complacency as they approached the decisive second leg, instead maintaining their focus and executing their game plan with the composure required to negotiate a potentially difficult continental tie.
The Royals made several changes to the side that had started the first leg, with Joel Mutakubwa being given the responsibility of guarding the Kitara goal ahead of Meddie Kibirige. The technical team also welcomed back experienced defender Murushid Juuko, who had missed the opening encounter and returned to the starting line-up to strengthen the heart of the defence in place of Benjamin Nyakojo. The changes did little to disrupt Kitara’s rhythm as the team settled into the contest with confidence.
Kitara’s early approach was built around patience, organisation and the need to avoid giving their opponents an opportunity to regain momentum. Mogadishu City knew that scoring was essential if they were to overturn the deficit, but the Royals remained compact and disciplined, gradually taking control of the contest while looking for openings in the visitors’ defensive structure.
Kalema, who had already announced himself as one of the key figures in the tie with a brace in the first leg, once again demonstrated his importance to Kitara’s continental ambitions. The forward opened the scoring after a well-constructed attacking move involving Patrick Kaddu, who showed excellent awareness to release Kalema into a dangerous position and give him the opportunity to put the Somali side’s defence under immediate pressure.
Kalema’s initial effort was directed towards Mogadishu City goalkeeper Yusuf Yusuf, but the goalkeeper was unable to hold the ball, leaving the danger alive inside the penalty area. Kalema reacted with impressive alertness, reaching the loose ball before the defenders could intervene and calmly finishing the rebound to give Kitara a deserved lead and further strengthen their position in the tie.
The opening goal placed Mogadishu City in an even more difficult situation, as the visitors now needed to find goals while also preventing Kitara from extending their advantage. The Somali side attempted to increase the pressure and search for a response, but Kitara’s defensive organisation remained intact. The Royals managed the remainder of the first half intelligently, limiting their opponents’ opportunities and ensuring they entered the interval with both the lead and the aggregate advantage firmly under control.
After the restart, Kitara continued to display the composure that had characterised their performance throughout the tie. Rather than retreating into a purely defensive approach, the Royals remained willing to attack whenever opportunities presented themselves, and their persistence was eventually rewarded when they found the second goal in the 62nd minute through Tuwesigye.
The move began with another important contribution from captain Jasper Aheebwa, whose aerial presence helped Kitara turn an attacking opportunity into a decisive moment. Aheebwa rose to meet a cross from Kabon Living and directed his header into the path of Tuwesigye, who reacted quickly and produced a superb volley to beat the Mogadishu City goalkeeper and send the home side further ahead.
Tuwesigye’s strike effectively changed the complexion of the contest, stretching Kitara’s aggregate advantage to 4-1 and leaving Mogadishu City with an enormous challenge. With the visitors now requiring several goals to rescue the tie, Kitara were able to play with even greater confidence, while the pressure shifted entirely onto their opponents to produce an extraordinary comeback.
The Royals handled the closing stages with considerable maturity, refusing to allow the visitors any opportunity to turn the match into a late contest. Kitara’s defensive unit remained organised, while the rest of the team worked collectively to control possession, manage the tempo and protect their advantage. Their efforts were rewarded with another clean sheet, allowing the Ugandan side to celebrate a second victory over Mogadishu City within a week.
The result represents another significant achievement for Kitara FC as they continue to make progress on the continental stage. Having travelled into the return leg with only a one-goal advantage, the Royals could have been vulnerable to an early setback, but their ability to remain composed and ultimately win the match by two clear goals demonstrated both their quality and their growing confidence in African competition.
Kalema’s contribution across the two legs was particularly decisive, with the forward finding the net three times during the tie and repeatedly providing Kitara with the attacking spark they needed. His goals, combined with Tuwesigye’s important second-half finish, ensured that the Royals never surrendered control of the contest and completed the job with authority.
The victory, however, brings with it an even greater challenge, as Kitara’s reward for eliminating Mogadishu City is a meeting with Egyptian giants Al Ahly in the next round of the CAF Confederation Cup. The Egyptian side represents a significant step up in opposition and will provide Kitara with an opportunity to measure themselves against one of the continent’s most recognisable and successful football clubs.
Kitara therefore move forward from a 4-1 aggregate victory over Mogadishu City with their confidence high and their continental ambitions growing. The Royals have demonstrated that they are capable of handling pressure, protecting an advantage and delivering when it matters, but the forthcoming encounter with Al Ahly will demand an even higher level of performance as Kitara’s continental adventure enters a much more demanding chapter.
