Uganda Police Football Club have received a major financial lift after securing a UGX 450 million sponsorship deal with Yaobai Cement Karamoja, a partnership that could provide the foundation for the historic club to rebuild its competitiveness, strengthen talent development and reclaim a more prominent position in Ugandan football.
The agreement was signed on Tuesday at the Uganda Police Force headquarters in Naguru, Kampala, with Police FC chairman Senior Commissioner of Police (SCP) Timothy Halango and senior representatives of Yaobai Cement present as the two institutions formalised a partnership that could mark an important new chapter in the club’s 61-year history.
The UGX 450 million is Yaobai Cement’s commitment for the first year of the partnership, with the possibility of increased financial support in subsequent years depending on the club’s performance and future agreements between the two parties. For Police FC, the immediate significance is not simply the size of the investment, but the opportunity it creates to address some of the financial constraints that have limited the club’s ambitions over the years.
Halango said inadequate resources have previously made it difficult for the club to fully pursue its sporting and development objectives, particularly in identifying, nurturing and retaining talent capable of competing at the highest level.
“Resource constraints have been keeping this club back from realizing its objectives of identifying and developing talent and playing competitively in the league,”
Halango said.
The Police FC chairman sees the partnership as an investment that should extend beyond the first team and contribute to the wider development of young people through sport. With football providing one of the most visible platforms for youth engagement, Halango believes the benefits of the sponsorship could ultimately reach the broader sporting community and contribute to the country’s talent pipeline.
“It should benefit the youth, sporting fraternity and the country, so it’s a landmark achievement,” he said.
That wider social dimension is also central to Yaobai Cement’s decision to enter the partnership. The company’s Marketing and Performance Manager Marvin N. Biyinzika said Police FC’s relationship with the community, particularly its ability to engage young people through football, was one of the major attractions.
“We really like the idea of community development,”
Biyinzika said.
The partnership therefore carries ambitions beyond placing a sponsor behind a football team. It gives Yaobai Cement an established sporting platform through which to strengthen its relationship with the club’s players, technical staff and supporters, while also creating greater opportunities to connect its products with communities across the country.
For Police FC, the bigger question now is how effectively the new resources can be converted into sustainable sporting progress. The club has a rich history dating back 61 years, with a Uganda Premier League title and a CECAFA club championship among its major achievements, giving it a pedigree that contrasts with its more recent struggles to consistently challenge at the top end of the domestic game.
Yaobai Cement believes that history still carries significant value, describing Police FC as a “sleeping giant” whose potential remains largely untapped. The company’s backing is based on the belief that stronger financial foundations can help awaken that potential and give the club the capacity to compete more consistently for honours at both domestic and regional level.
The challenge for Police FC will now be to ensure that the sponsorship produces lasting institutional value rather than only short-term improvements. Strategic recruitment, youth development, coaching, player welfare, infrastructure and stronger club structures will all be important if the new investment is to translate into performances on the pitch and a healthier talent pathway off it.
The partnership was facilitated by Yaobai Management and its marketing team, alongside PR and marketing agencies APT Communications and Urban Native, bringing together the commercial and communication structures required to establish the agreement.
For Police FC, the UGX 450 million deal arrives at a potentially important moment. It provides the club with resources to confront some of the limitations that have held back its ambitions while creating an opportunity to rebuild around one of its greatest traditional strengths — the ability to identify and develop talent.
The real measure of the partnership, however, will come with time. If Police FC can turn the financial backing into stronger structures, a productive youth system and improved performances in the Uganda Premier League and regional competitions, Yaobai Cement’s investment could become more than a sponsorship deal; it could become a catalyst for the revival of one of Ugandan football’s historic institutions.
