Uganda has set its sights on another successful FEASSA Games campaign, with Minister of State for Sports Peter Ogwang challenging Team Uganda to return from Tanzania with the regional title firmly in their hands.
Ogwang made the call on Saturday while flagging off the Ugandan delegation for the 2026 Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Associations (FEASSA) Games at the National Council of Sports offices. Speaking to the athletes, coaches, teachers and officials, the minister stressed that the competition should be viewed as more than a regional school sports event, describing it as an important platform for identifying athletes capable of progressing to Uganda’s national teams.
“As we win the FEASSA Games, I expect the transition of athletes to represent the national teams. From these students, we must get students who are national team material for the next two or three years,”
Ogwang said, challenging the young athletes to use the tournament as an opportunity to announce themselves on the regional stage.
The minister also called for stronger cooperation between national sports federations and the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA), arguing that the talent discovered at FEASSA should not disappear once the school competition ends. He urged federations to work closely with USSSA to monitor promising athletes, nurture their development and create a clear pathway from secondary school sport into elite competition.
Uganda heads to Tanzania with one of its largest contingents for the regional championship, underlining the country’s growing investment in school sports. The delegation comprises 127 teams from 67 schools, with 1,304 secondary school participants, 160 primary pupils and 72 students from Special Needs Education institutions.
For USSSA, the mission is clear: defend Uganda’s dominance at the regional games. USSSA President Justus Mugisha said the delegation is travelling to Tanzania determined to retain a title Uganda has held for the past five years.
“We are taking these teams to defend the title that we have held for the past five years,” Mugisha said.
National Council of Sports General Secretary Dr Benard Ogwel also attended the flag-off ceremony and urged the young competitors to appreciate the responsibility that comes with representing Uganda. He congratulated USSSA on its continued contribution to school sports and reminded the athletes that their conduct on and off the field will reflect on the country.
Ogwang also used the occasion to issue a firm warning on doping, reminding athletes that the use of prohibited substances could have serious consequences for their sporting careers. He equally cautioned teachers and officials against facilitating doping practices, stressing that responsibility for clean sport extends beyond the athletes themselves.
“Students, I warn you about anti-doping because you will be banned, and teachers and officials, your punishment is imprisonment,” Ogwang warned.
Beyond competition, the government also raised logistical and safety concerns surrounding the movement of the large delegation. Ogwang directed that all buses transporting Team Uganda be cleared by Uganda Police and the Ministry of Works and Transport before departure. He further urged drivers and officials to observe speed limits and comply with regulations governing the number of students transported in each vehicle.
Meanwhile, Senior Education Officer Grace Abalo raised concerns over the financial pressures facing USSSA, noting that government support is no longer sufficient to meet the demands of all the association’s championships and programmes. Her remarks highlighted the growing scale of school sport in Uganda and the need for increased investment to sustain the country’s competitive edge at regional and international level.
With the delegation now preparing for the journey to Tanzania, attention turns to the competition itself. Uganda will field teams across football, basketball, volleyball and hockey, with established school sports powerhouses joined by emerging programmes seeking to make their mark on the FEASSA stage.
The tournament will not only provide an opportunity for Uganda’s schools to compete for regional honours but will also offer coaches, scouts and national federations an important window to assess the next generation of Ugandan sporting talent.
