Uganda’s women’s 3×3 basketball team returns to action on Day Three of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games with confidence soaring after a remarkable opening day that saw them complete a flawless run of victories. The quartet of Melissa Akullo, Jane Asinde, Jamila Nansikombi and Perus Nyamwenge will now face a tougher examination as they continue their pursuit of a place among the tournament’s top contenders.
The Ugandans announced their arrival on the Commonwealth stage in impressive fashion on Day One, producing three victories from three matches to finish the opening day unbeaten. Their performances showcased outstanding teamwork, defensive discipline and attacking efficiency as they adapted quickly to the fast-paced nature of the 3×3 format.
Coach Nick Natuhereza’s side began their campaign with a convincing victory over Jamaica before overcoming the Cayman Islands in another strong display. They then saved their best performance for last, dominating regional rivals Kenya with a commanding 21-5 victory to complete a perfect clean sweep.
The opening-day success was built on the team’s excellent chemistry and ability to remain composed under pressure. After experiencing a competitive start in their first match, Uganda grew stronger with every game, with each player making valuable contributions both offensively and defensively.
However, Day Three presents a completely different challenge as Uganda prepares to face two demanding opponents at the Scottish Events Centre. The first assignment will come against Fiji at 3:35 p.m. East African Time, before the Ugandans return later in the evening for a major showdown against basketball powerhouse Australia at 10:45 p.m.
The clash against Fiji will provide Uganda with an opportunity to maintain their winning momentum and further strengthen their position in the competition. Fiji, known for their physical approach and athletic style of play, will test Uganda’s ability to control the pace, defend aggressively and make efficient decisions in crucial moments.
The biggest challenge of the day, however, will come against Australia. The Australians represent one of the strongest basketball nations in the Commonwealth and will provide a significant test of Uganda’s ambitions. The encounter will require the Ugandan quartet to combine their speed and creativity with patience, discipline and defensive organisation.
Despite the quality of opposition awaiting them, Uganda enters Day Three with renewed belief after proving they can compete at this level. Their unbeaten start has provided a strong foundation, but the team understands that consistency will be key as the tournament moves into a more competitive phase.
Melissa Akullo, Jane Asinde, Jamila Nansikombi and Perus Nyamwenge have already demonstrated that they possess the talent and determination to challenge the best teams in the competition. Their chemistry on the court, quick transitions and ability to support each other have been among their biggest strengths.
For Coach Natuhereza and his players, the focus will be on maintaining the same intensity that delivered success on the opening day while making necessary adjustments against stronger opponents. Every possession will matter in 3×3 basketball, where momentum can shift within seconds and small mistakes can prove costly.
As Team Uganda continues its Commonwealth Games journey, the women’s 3×3 basketball team carries the hopes of a nation eager to see more historic performances. After a dream start in Glasgow, Day Three offers another opportunity for the Ugandans to show their quality and strengthen their case as one of the teams to watch.
