Team Uganda made a memorable entrance at the spectacular opening ceremony of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, bringing colour, culture and national pride to a historic night at the OVO Hydro in Scotland.
The ceremony marked a significant milestone as the first Commonwealth Games opening ceremony to be staged entirely indoors, providing a breathtaking start to the multi-sport extravaganza.
Dressed in elegant traditional ceremonial attire, the Ugandan contingent captivated spectators as they proudly marched into the arena waving the national flag. Their vibrant display of culture and unity stood out among the 74 participating Commonwealth nations, earning admiration from the thousands in attendance and millions watching around the world.
The ceremony was graced by His Majesty King Charles III, who officially welcomed athletes and officials to the Games. His presence added further prestige to an evening filled with dazzling performances, music and celebrations that reflected the diversity and shared values of the Commonwealth.
Uganda also occupied a place of honour through Dr. Don Rukare, the President of Commonwealth Sport, who delivered a warm welcome to the global Commonwealth family. Wearing a traditional Scottish kilt, Dr. Rukare symbolised the close connection between the host nation and the wider Commonwealth while underscoring Uganda’s growing influence within international sport.
The Ugandan delegation was led by the Minister of State for Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, who joined athletes and officials in celebrating the country’s participation at one of the Commonwealth’s premier sporting events. The team’s smart appearance and enthusiastic march reflected the optimism and determination with which Uganda approaches the Games.
With the opening ceremony complete, Team Uganda now shifts its focus to competition across multiple disciplines, carrying the hopes of the nation as athletes strive for medals and memorable performances on the Glasgow stage.
