Uganda Premier League champions Vipers Sports Club have bolstered their defensive ranks with the signing of defender Nicholas Mwere on a two-year contract, following the expiry of his deal at BUL FC.
The left-footed defender joins the Venoms on a free transfer as the Kitende-based side continues to sharpen its squad with intent and precision ahead of the demanding 2026/27 campaign.
Mwere arrives at Kitende carrying solid top-flight experience, having spent three seasons at BUL FC where he registered 69 league appearances. A composed yet assertive presence in defence, he has built a reputation as a no-nonsense operator with sharp game reading, disciplined positioning, and the mentality to deliver under pressure.
Naturally a left-back but equally effective at centre-back, Mwere is widely viewed as a modern, flexible defender capable of adapting to different tactical demands. Before his spell at BUL FC, he featured for Busoga United, where he first broke into the Uganda Premier League and steadily developed into a more complete and dependable defensive figure.
His standout 2023/24 season earned him a place in the Uganda Premier League Team of the Season, a clear reflection of his consistency, resilience, and growing influence at the top level. That campaign marked his rise as one of the league’s most reliable defensive assets, combining grit, awareness, and composure.
On the international stage, Mwere has also gained valuable exposure with the Uganda Cranes, featuring at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN). He has additionally represented the Uganda Sand Cranes in beach soccer, further underlining his versatility, adaptability, and football intelligence across different formats of the game.
Vipers head coach Denis Lavagne welcomed the signing, highlighting the defender’s flexibility and reliability as key attributes that will add balance and depth to the squad’s backline.
“Nicholas is a defender with great discipline, versatility and consistency. He can perform in different positions across the backline, which is extremely valuable over the course of a long season”.
Lavagne noted.
For his part, Mwere expressed excitement over the move, describing it as a significant step forward in his career and a chance to prove himself at a high-performance club.

Mwere becomes the third signing of the window for the Venoms, following Joel Sserunjogi and Jacques Mangoba, as the Kitende outfit continues to strengthen its squad depth ahead of a packed season that will include the Uganda Premier League, Stanbic Uganda Cup, CECAFA Kagame Cup, and the CAF Champions League.
